Renderosity Free Stuff Artist - PhilC

deemarie · February 21, 2006 9:50 am

Each month we showcase a Renderosity Free Stuff Artist, in appreciation for their thoughtfulness, and countless hours spent creating free items for the Renderosity community. This month we are proud to showcase the works of Phil Cooke, better know to his Renderosity fellow artists as PhilC.
Tell us a little bit about PhilC.
PhilC ... well what you see is what you get. Ex-plumber, ex-patriot Brit now living in Kentucky USA. Long story, women are bound to be involved in it somewhere [smiles].

How long have you been modeling? How did you find Poser?
Started messing with computers at school. I'm now 50 so we are talking punched paper tape and a monolith the size of half a dozen file cabinets with less computing power than your pocket calculator. When the Spectrum ZX 51 came out I purchased one. Was never interested in playing the games, basically was never good at them. Does Pac Man have a level 2? I enjoyed the logic, wrote text based adventures games with "stunning" 16 bit ASCII art graphics. I progressed to a 486 PC "so that the kids could do their homework" and just messed about with the programs. I have creative talents but I can not draw. Or rather I can produce top quality engineering plans but not arty stuff. I found that graphics programs came with a very handy feature. Its the undo command. Boy I wore that to death. Then by progression, I got Internet access, searched and surfed and bumped into Poser.

What was the first model you ever made? Did it work out the way you planned?
Not sure of the very first one, but certainly one of my first freebies was the P3 French Maid. Looking back it was not that great, but at the time I really thought I had achieved something. Its still on my old site. I keep it there to how folks how I got started. I'm not that great, I just did not give up when it got difficult. We can all choose not to give up. If this 3D stuff were easy there would be no challenge.

What's your favorite free model?
Its a coin toss between the Freak's tutu and Vicki's comfy shoes.

How long have you been a member of the Poser community? What do you like best about it?
I saw Noah tying up his boat so it was probably from near the beginning. I think what I like most is that folks are willing to help each other. There is a phrase,"A rising tide raises all ships". I believe this has been very evident here. As we all share our knowledge, we all learn together. There is a synergy; the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts. I certainly could not have come as far as I have without the help and encouragement of others.

Where do you get your ideas from?
I get some ideas from here, some from over there, and one or two from under this. I tend to think sideways, not in straight lines. A train of thought quickly gets derailed and I end up paddling my bicycle without a parachute.

What version of Poser do you use? Why do you like it best?
I've always enjoyed the current version and have appreciated the improvements that came with each new version. Poser 6 rocks, but I have cured that by placing a small wad of folded paper under the uneven corner of my monitor stand.

When you're making your models and nothing is going right - what keeps you going?
Prunes. I'm a great believer in natural remedies.

Do you have any advice for people just starting out sharing their models?
Yes, just do it. Its the best way for folks to get to know you. Obviously you will try to do your best, but never hold back because you do not think it's good enough. My early stuff is, well, probably the same as anyone's early stuff. Develop your own style, try to be original.

Can you give us a hint what the next free item is?
Yes certainly. I've held Gladys Emmanual in the wings waiting for such an occasion. © PhilC [Phil Cooke]

She uses a revolutionary new Poser bone system. Even Larry Weinberg, thought it was noteworthy. The deal is that once you see how it works you must not "tell a soul". You can drop big hints though. That way everyone gets the pleasure of discovering it for themselves [smiles].

Congratulations, Phil :) You are absolutely right, we all learn together and do it much faster than if we did it alone.

Good to see you showcased Phil. BTW you are a total nutter - your replies to some of the questions really cracked me up. I'm just glad I wasn't drinking anything at the time or I'd be sending you a bill for cleaning a keyboard & monitor. BTW your plugins for Poser rock (I personally make use of Wardrobe wizard a lot). Thanks for some wonderful freebies.

"Do you have any advice for people just starting out sharing their models? Yes, just do it." Best advice there is! I took the plunge and started creating content around the first of this year. I'm not very good at it yet, but I keep trying. Your freebies are amazing. Thanks for the content and the inspiration. And thanks for such a serious interview. :)
