Description

This posting was originally done simply to illustrate to myself what could be achieved employing a High Dynamic Range (HDR) process. The more I looked at it, the better I liked the result and I thought it might be of interest to those of you who are in the early stages of working with HDR along with me. I have not been impressed with the radical changes that HDR can bring to a photo but enhancing a photo through better use of available low light is appealing to me. Thanks for stopping by. Your comments are always highly prized. Bill

I really dislike the extreme examples of HDR. But this surely is what it is about, superb! (I wouldn't know where to start myself)

Full view is great. Thanks for making this big enough to be meaningful! :) Your technique is wonderful! Subtle enhancement, and the result is amazing. Excellent work, my friend ... I'm totally impressed.

This is indeed brilliant postwork/HDR work... can you share some more details (number of pictures, software used,...) ? Normally, I'm like Andrea, I don't like the extreme/outrageous enhancements often seen on HDR picture, but here I have to admit that the result is impressive. I'm just wondering what would be the result of the treatment of just a single picture with a software like DxO Optics ? Finally I think this picture is worth to be uploaded in the Forum in order to continue the discussion there...

As an experiment: full marks for the changes wrought. As an enhanced image: not so much. It's over the top for me.

I'm not an expert in photography but I believe what I see and it looks stunning to me Bill.

Great job, Bill! You can get that result postworking the picture... well, that's what I do...:D

The zoom is so worth it. Great to see you having a go.

So much rich color added by your post work, especially on the face of the clock. To each his own as to just how much is over the top, but I think this is very nicely done, Bill.

Ah yes! Definitely the one on the right! HDR? Still not sure what that is but it looks good. Rob.

The whole ethos of high dynamic range imagery has been totaly blown out of the water by the gaudy bright oversaturated images we see out there, I feel sure the original idea was to enhance the details in the shadow areas and not to make a clowns image from it, that said, I was lured into the early gaudy over the top images myself, but now prefere the softly softly approach, all this said, I think your image is right on the money Bill, not too over the top,and kind to the eye, well done!

I agree with the other folks..this really came out nice...did you try the same shot by just postworking it without using the HDR procedure..just to see how they would differ..if any.. again..nice result..

I love the sobriety in your HDR render instead of a furious contrast intensity. The blue color on clock is nice touch. Well done.

The HDR certainly has enhanced the capture. It has given it a wonderful glow. I must look into trying this out.

HDR, a genre that is completely alien to me. I assume it's a product of Photoshop. If not, then I'm really out to sea when and if I ever tackle the process myself. That said, a dynamic duo of display, but I prefer the image on the right because of its clarity and warmth.

Very valid points coming to the fore here, I am also sure that HDR is getting abused, apologies to the people who WANT to bring out an artistic/surreal side to a pic. I have achieved most of the results by means of altering mid level lighting, contrast and applying subtle changes with curves. Excellent illustration Bill. For those worried I am condemning HDR - not in the least, I have my own fun with it too, especially sunsets with clouds, but there too I may have been erring to the side of abuse.

I like the comparison Bill, but I am not sure which one I like better. Yes, the one on the right is crisper, but do I really want this? I am not sure. It depends on each individual picture.
