Description

Back to her rooms Eve told the butler she wouldn't come down for dinner. So a she-bot with a trolley full of delicious food showed up. "My dear - the attached note said - "How inconsiderate and selfish I am to forget my manners. Sleep soundly. E." Eve looked at the food and wondered if it was drugged. She decided it wasn't: they were trying to worm their way into her confidence as they did with her mother. Lying on her bed she thought about the perfect spook's rules JS had taught her, but her mother's speech was haunting her. JS's father? WTF! "I want nothing from my family, not even their name." JS had said when she had asked whether Jay Sea was a phony name. From Jay's feelings for his father, the man had to be really an evil person. "Oh, Jay, they're trying to make you look insane!" she thought with her maximum force in the hope that JS or a ship could hear her.

She thought about that closed door deep in JS’s mind .... She remembered his concern: "Did I hurt you?" he had asked. Yet he had offered to open it for her, but she had refused. Whatever there was behind that door Eve knew Jay would never hurt her.
The next day Eve had breakfast in her room and her mother joined her.
"Oh Eve," Sishia said, "do you feel rested now? Last night everybody had dinner in their rooms, but tonight I truly hope you come down for dinner. Mr Flaw is so a kind and gentlemanly person! Really it would be rag-mannered of you if you don’t."
“OK.” Eve nodded. "You talked about JS’s father. Who is he?" In her mind, Eve had discarded everybody because of their age: 3TC was too young, and JS would tell her for sure, Eros Flaw was too old.
Her mother made a face and whispered conspiratorially: "I'm dying to tell you, but he asked me not to. He wants to be the one to tell you!"
Eve nodded: “I still have a little headache. I’d like to rest a little longer."
"Oh, here they have all kind of medical stuff!" Sishia exclaimed. "Can I bring you some pills?"
"No, a little rest, and I’ll be fine." Eve replied.
Eve only pretended to sleep, but her mind was scouting around for open minds. After a while, her perseverance was rewarded: there was a pattern in the mind-jammers. Slowly - "Ah Vickie if you were here!" – Eve was able to catch the frequency patterns and her jailers’ thoughts become more readable.
Eve suddenly heard the door open. Apparently someone had the master key. She stood pretending to be asleep, eyes shut and mind probing. It was a cyborg. Silently the cyborg put all her used clothes in a plastic bag and left in place a luxurious evening dress and a diamond parure.
Eve was able to penetrate into the cyborg’s mind, though it was shielded by a thought-blocker.
"I must be careful not to contaminate her DNA." the cyborg shuddered at the thought of the punishment and Eve clearly felt the wave of terror that shook the human part of the cyborg’s brain.
They wanted her DNA!
"Damn bastards, that's your purpose!"
On her way to the dining room Eve felt the opulent baroque corridors as friendly as a Death Row.
Eros Flaw met her warmly, but Eve grabbed her clutch like a lifesaver and the man gave up hugging.
"I hope you're feeling better, my child!" Flaw smiled.
"She just needed to rest!" Her mother stepped in getting under Eve’s skin. The other guests stared. All around hovered that stinky aura of greed. During the long dinner Eros Flaw skillfully steered the conversation from small talks to more interesting topics.
"This telepathic thing is truly extraordinary!" He smiled.
"Since the first Naga, Naga blood has run strong in our family-line!" Sishia cried proudly from the other side of the table.
Eve stiffened. She wanted to kick her mom, but just frowned a silent “Shut up!”
But now Sishia could show off in front of Gray princes and was bragging in full flow.
"Interesting!" Eros Flaw whispered.
Eve caught an evil flash in his eyes.

Wonderful work ! You're courageous to adapt to the new site's constraints in this way ! I am appaled by what has been imposed on artists-writers like you.

I did it for my readers' sake, but I'm very annoyed with the "revolution".
I discovered the new text limit now is 25000 characters so this issue looks fixed. It's the image limits that are a true PIA.

What a great name, Eros Flaw. Great chapter and illustration. It should be interesting to see what Flaw's agenda is.

More multi-layered conversation and collision of purposes here. All revealed with care and the glee all writers have as they slowly reveal more of the tensions between characters. That comes across in your writing. I like all your cross tensions, the false tone in Eve’s mother, Eros Flaw’s obvious back-handed intents, Eve’s double role as cooperative guest and mind-spy, her pining for JS (and her memories), the double faced nature of the cyborg, etc. And lines like, “On her way to the dining room Eve felt the opulent baroque corridors as friendly as a Death Row.” Terrific line. And the thick irony of Flaw’s hug. (Re your witty names, Shakespeare had character names like “Eros Flaw”. I may have mentioned these before, but if not, check out this roster from King Henry IV, Part 2: Pistol, Poins, Mistress Quickly, Mouldy, Shadow, Wart, Feeble, Bullcalf, Fang, Rumour, etc. Helluva group, huh?) The cyborg moment is really well done, with Eve faking sleeping while she scans its brains. Lots of hidden tensions in this scene, and you end it with “Eve caught an evil flash in his eyes”---a perfect ending and setup for future scenes. You have tension upon tension here, mostly revealed quietly; and hidden agendas we only partly see; and an end suggesting that something will be revealed very soon. All finely done, Flavia.

As an aside, I see that this was when the RR “revolution” hit---you were forced to continue your tale in a comment! It was soon after that at least 3 good things came of this mess: 1) the 25,000 character limit, 2) and a much, much larger image limit (I’ve gotten 3.5 MB up without problem... no more compressing the hell out of an image and saying goodbye to details galore), and 3) we can now edit in preview mode more than once (no more editing in front of the world, after the piece has been uploaded). So, with all the disasters of this change, at least a few great changes were made...I remember you in the forum, as one of several writers who were aghast at what they'd done. With good reason. There's still stuff I can't stand about the changes, but those 3 improvements are major improvements...

Back to the show. Again, a masterful image. For one, you skewed the angles as if you’d shot it with a wide-angle lens: Ie, walls are tilting in, I assume to convey a sense of the world caving in on these people, thick with irony and hidden agendas. It’s also very interesting, visually...And fine lighting on the main characters, lots of shadow on Eve to bring out the intrigue. Eve’s mother (Sishia) is all invitation, even though we assume she’s got ulterior motives or else is duped, drugged, whatever. The cyborg is in high light, giving a certain chill to the scene (a scene infiltrated by partly mechanical beings programmed to wheedle their way into people, set them up, etc). The couple in the back are terrifically attired---I love that gown with a 1920s bottom-half, including the sash. Something out of 1925. The architectural details are all expert (incl the paintings), as are the shadows on the floor. And once again, Sishia is wearing a copper hued gown which seems to meld into the hues of the room. Dressing her as you have makes her appear strangely monolithic, as if she were made that way by the enemy. A scene of real formality, but filled with tensions. Very finely done, Flavia! I don’t do 3D, so I have no clue the effort involved in such scenes; but the results are consummate as always.

Well I'm at an hour and 55 minutes, and I have to stop. I could start the next installment, but I'd have to leave 10 minutes into it. It just takes me too long to do more than a few images in 2 hours. But at least you know I put real time into these. And I'm not far from the most current one. I finally fav'd your gallery---I thought i had, I didn't realize I hadn't; but as long as I'm close to the most recent pieces, I'm glad I did. Your engagement in all levels of detail, both in story and image, as well as your fine-tuned sense of irony and humor, are engaging from start to finish. Another delightful session in your gallery...
