The image is very striking and well done. However, philosophically, you can take comfort in the Lord saying, "I will never leave you or forsake you". Though we may feel abandoned sometimes when things don't go well, the only way to really distance yourself from God is to purposely try to move away from Him, 'cause He never moves away from you, no matter what you do. Even Lucifer, once an angel of light, had to deliberately choose to call himself greater than God in order to distance himself from God's love and protection.
