Description
Adolphe Saalfeld, a perfume maker, boarded the Titanic with a leather portfolio of perfume samples. The American perfume market was booming, so he was likely planning to see his fragrances to the department stores in the major cities.
He was lucky to survive the sinking but had to leave his perfumes behind. Most of the perfumes he packed were recovered, and some still contain the aroma. When recovered, their scent filled the air.
Each essential oil vial had one scent and was labelled. The glass was encased in a metal cylinder which was stored in a leather case. These natural oils of rose, lavender, bergamot, and other plant types were for blending into perfume.
