Description

Although it seems to show the same projectiles as in 'Battleship Texas BB-35 tour guide" they are arranged in three instead of two levels and in a different space. Note the nice wooden floors of this era. Ignore the fan and plastic trash receptacle. The guns are referred to as 5" 51 caliber. In this usage caliber refers to the ratio between the bore and barrel length and conflicts with the usage for small arms where caliber is cited as the bore size. As such the caliber is independent of the projectile design which would simply be 5 ". The distinctions in projectiles is between the yellow nosed black projectiles which are armor piercing and other types color coded differently. The actual hoist for this type gun is nearer to the gun which in the original build were in casemates and an air castle on each side. Now these guns are only in the air castle. These changes occurred in 1927 and 1942.

A heavy shell to carry. The casemates and air castles were very wet, water came in at the edges, which is why they were finally eliminated, mostly during the inter-war era. And a wet wooden deck was slippery. Nice photo. Do you have more? If so, please post! :-)

Nice shot. An older weapon that lasted through the Second World War.
