outstanding depiction of the horror some face trying to be in a safer place. I knew the relatives of a man that came from the Philippines to work and try to make things better for his family. however he went to work for a convenience store the day after his arrival and the same day someone shot him dead in a holdup . I have heard in the news of other people trying to escape the hardships in their country and have someone kill them here. very strange also that many returning soldiers end up being killed right after arriving home from a "war zone". one was killed because someone wanted his expensive wheels on his pickup

Forgive my being late to this upload, I didn't receive an ebot. I'm glad I came to your gallery, because I was able to view this powerful image. You've painted (via Bryce) a post-acopcalyptic scene. A single person on a mule, and a mule behind him. And a cart with belongings on it. Someone wrote that the 20th Century was the "Century of Refugees". Maybe you know Sabastiao Salgado, the photographer: He photographed more refugees than almost any other photographer of the last 100 years. And his "refugee landscapes" are devastating---they're almost 'biblical' in proportions. Now that we're in the 21st Century, the refugee crisis continues. In the United States and Europe, we are turning away refugees (while some of our leaders help to create more). So your image is very timely.

The red haze of your image looks like the haze left from war. And, of course, it is the color of blood. And it pours through those arches, perhaps from the aftermath of a terrible massacre. And that lone refugee---with his or her mules---is symbolic of the many people fleeing oppression and murder in their homeland. You've created a vision of "the aftermath," where people seek home away-from-home. And your image is desolate, yet filled with the remnants of a once-thriving place. You chose the ancient name (Palmyra), to evoke the agelessness of refugees. And those arches could be the old Roman arches still present in the Middle East and (of course) parts of Europe. But, in your image, the arches are ghosts. Maybe one day they'll be 'home' again---but not now. As the old Latin saying goes, "sic transit gloria mundi"---even great civilizations will fall. But they're not very great 'civilizations' if they leave scenes like this behind them. A powerful image; yet somehow it has hope. Maybe the refugee in your image will find home one day, and start a new life. One hopes so. A very powerful image; and it has a raw beauty, despite its despair.
