Description

On May 17, 1890 a fire started in a hardware store in Havana. Firemen responded but had not been told that gunpowder was stored at the site. Twenty-two firefighters were killed in the explosion that followed. There is a 75-foot (23 m)-high monument to the firefighters who lost their lives that day in the Colon Cemetery. It was erected by the grateful citizens of Havana. The names and likenesses of the fallen are carved into the base of the monument.

Having been a Fireman the subject is close to my heart Mark. Four super pics.

19th century public art (memorial in this case) looks so much different then late 20th and early 21st century public art. Things appear much more formal and sentimental in the 19th century. I've seen the same thing in the WWI museum in Kansas City. This is a delightful collage of the detailed figures that make up this memorial. Well done Mark.

They are rightly remembered, great photos. The style is incredibly heroic, which is appropriate in this case!

i read the comments above with real attention...Jeff was a firefighter (I didn't know), and Bill and Andrea make very poignant comments. Yes, this is an older style, and heroic and sentimental. But the builders obviously wanted to remember what is always a terrifying event. You really gave us a strong array of what this monument contains. Such dramatic gestures---the top angel pointing to heaven, almost as a command (as in, 'take these souls, honor them!'), the dramatic way the victim is draped, and even his clenched fingers. (Good capture!) And such heart-tugging gestures on the two side shots---these sculptors made real drama, and it's striking stuff, in no small part from the clarity of your shots, the attention to each furl and gesture, how they stand out from the sky behind them, and how you capture that bluish-gray tone, which to me feels like mourning...A very impressive group, and you organized them with a dramatic pov of the top, a statue meant to wake up heaven...fine work and montage, Mark.
