Description

2B pencil (think that was the only one) on A5 sketchpad, June-July 1994 10 years ago I suddenly became heavily into the music of Peter Gabriel, and this was a kind of combined exercise and dedication. I'd borrowed a biography of him from my local library and took it with me on a holiday to Scotland, where I began work assembling and blending images from the photos within, within eyesight of a classic view of the Loch Sunart. Later, back at home, I finished it off. It was supposed to montage various familiar aspects of his life and career: early childhood (top right) singing with Genesis (left) the first album cover (bottom right) the second cover (tearing hands at bottom) the third cover (tiny inset) 1979 photo in face paint (eye on left) working on the fourth album (where the nose should be) the So album cover (eye on right) with fellow WOMAD members Sheila Chandra (beautiful woman, beautiful voice) and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a huge (literally) and sadly missed talent of devotional song (bottom left) and finally the spirit dancer from the cover of Us (top left) These days I rarely listen to his work but a few choice favourites remain: San Jacinto, Mercy Street, Slow Marimbas, Only Us... and of course his finest moment Passion, his soundtrack to Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ

I really appreciate pencil drawings and art. You've done a beautiful job with the photo montage, which I think is far more difficult than in digital medium. I sure wouldn't have any recommendations for improvement.

This is amazing.. do you know I have loved Peter Gabriel from a life?!? This work is honestly fantastic.. it is so symbolic and explicative about him, plus one gets well what you were feeling out from his music back then :) A wonderful touch :) your pencil can sing :)

This makes me think of a sort of "single frame" version of David Alfaro Siqueiros's historical works, such as "Marcha de la Historia", where he took to overlaying all of mexican history up to the time when he finished the painting on top of itself, making no sort of distinction between time and space, and covering all of the walls, as well as some of the ceiling and the floor, of a big building (no real point in naming the building since it probably won't mean anything to any of you.
No, this is not any social commentary, nor a display of random knowledge, this is actually a comment on the image.

I think what is amazing here is the ability to combine all of these images in sketch form, blending and shading, detailing and creating an overall design that comes together to form a visually artistic expresssion of one man's life in music and song! Excellent!

I recall seeing this before and was mightily impressed with it then. I didn't comment as I wasn't yet a Renderosity member! A great sort of drawn collage. Love this stuff!
