Description

I'm watching all of the Flintstones on DVD and I thought it would be fun to model the Bedrock Drive-In from the closing credits. WOW this was a lot more work than I originally thought! The lighting was pretty tricky to get it to match the original drawing. Cartoon artists draw things without worrying about 3D artist lighting! The lettering on the sign on the roof is a direct rip-off from the original image. I literally took a picture of this scene off my TV using my ipad. The lettering was manipulated using Paint Shop Pro and then mapped onto the three signs. It amazingly came out pretty good (lucky!). The text was adjusted to fit the mesh using the transformation tools. The "DRIVE IN" lettering was done a completely different way. I first setup a simple map of white with DRIVE IN lettering using Arial font in black. That was then blurred using DCG Shader Ops 2 and also using Veloute's Perturbation Filter. The pattern on the bark on the trees was done using EnhanceC Tile (also perturbed). There are 28 rocks, 19 stars, all placed in the same place to reproduce the original image. The cars are a little bit different scale wise because the original image isn't scaled in 3D space. It came out ok though. It took me a little while to figure out how to make the car canopies but once I got it figured out, it was easy after that. I did the canopy one time for Fred Flintstones car but I did it in a VERY painful process before. I figured out a much easier way to do it again (which is good since there are three of them). This took me about 10 hours to cook up (224 objects in total). I seriously doubt that the original artist spent that sort of time on it. However, now that I have a 3D version made, I could animate and render this from lots of different points of views very easily. I guess the investment versus the possible outcomes have benefits and drawbacks in lots of different ways. Regardless, this came out pretty cool and it was a lot of fun to build! Enjoy! -Kix

You totally caught the feel of the Hanna-Barberra (sp?) original. But I thought it was curb service! Excellent, as always!
