Description
Technical Air Intelligence Unit- South-West Pacific was a combined forces intelligence unit operating from Brisbane, Australia at the Eagle Farm airbase in WW2.
Collecting and assessing information from battlefield debris to compensate for the Allies' general ignorance of Japanese aircraft specifications and manufacturing techniques, the unit also worked painstakingly to re-assemble intact Japanese fighters (such as this Nakajima "Hayabusa") from multiple wrecks recovered as airfields were over-run in the grim fighting out there in the Pacific.
That way the Allies could push through the mystique and evaluate the fearsome Imperial Japanese Army and Navy "Zeroes" against the capabilities of Allied fighters- and build tactics to counter them. Quite a different world really from the busy international airport operating nearby today.
The TAIU's work is perhaps better known for those "reporting names" you may know, like Zeke, Hamp and Betty, for various Japanese fighters and bombers. You've got to wonder what Betty the nurse did to deserve that?
Here, to recapture some of the moments recorded in wartime photos I've given my own "reconstructed" Poserworks Nakajima Ki43-I (avail at CP) a bit of polish and taken it for a spin in Vue, having applied some reassuring USAAF markings so as not to alarm the virtual residents of 1940's Brisbane below.

You have to laugh at some of the names given to Japanese aircraft but you can understand why as some of the official names were a bit of a mouthful. Mind you the Japanese did the same with the some of their cars too, Nissan(Datsun) Cedric & Gloria spring to mind. Cool image and nice work on re-texturing it. The aircraft looks quite graceful in silver.

A gorgeous scene. When I was young, those names for Japanese fighters used to crack me up. I can understand why they did not use names like winged death, hellfighter, or goremaker though.
