Description

Port Gamble, Washington, has a general store with a museum upstairs. This is a glass Japanese fishing float from that museum -- it would have washed up on a Washington beach many, many years ago. Fishing floats in Japan were made of recycled sake bottles. From time to time these floats would break free of their nets and drift off. Currents moved the floats around the Pacific Ocean, and some of the glass ended up here. Glass fishing floats are no longer used, so any that happened to wash ashore today would be quite old, and your chances of finding one would be slightly less than that of winning the lottery.

Excelent close up. The deep color makes is almost abstract.

Nice shot of a difficult subject! A few are still showing up on remote west coast Canadian shores, but you have to fly in and out and your exit depends on the weather. I have one which is about 14" in diameter and the same color as this. I can tell from the knots that this is authentic. There are many fakes being sold now.

At one time, we would find it along the shoreline. But I haven't seen any lately. Not for a while anyway. Collectors Item. Aloha

Even though Chicago is actually on a shore, we're a bit too far inland to have gotten anything as interesting as this. The only thing we get from the far reaches of the globe happen to be things like blood-sucking lampreys (but they're cute, anyway) and nothing like this. I'm gonna have to do some research into Japanese fishing floats! What colors you captured here, and I love the sense of looking into water...there's something of the sea in this, in the colors and even in the reflections and well, to put it mildly, this image rocks!

A very nice shot of this float. I used to go to the beach as a kid and I was always in hopes I would find one but I never did.

AAWWW, I love this shot. I have many of these glas floats. Ok, I dont think they were made for exactly the same reason. MY uncle and my father made macramé around them and you saw it in my gallery page 28.

This is a perfect example that tight cropping often brings out the best in an object. Sake bottles huh:) Love the detail and textures in the ropes, knots and rough glass. Now, let me go look for something to crop like this...hmmmmmm.

I have seen a few and, of course, there are copies being made now for home decorating. I used to have several in a small fishing net hung on my patio wall. That was a long time ago, though. Very creative shot.

I wondered when the upstairs shots were going to come out ;) Excellent capture of this float-in-bondage! I did not know what they were made of... I guess I should have gone upstairs too...

Excellent! I like the detail in the glass and the contrast in textures between the float and the netting that holds it.

Wow, I did not know that. Then there are many, many things I do not know. ;c) Awesome image, and it took me a little while to figure it out. Nice to have the explanation that goes with it, especially.

I've got a couple in my pond, but I had no idea they were Japanese! Maybe they aren't, but they are old alright! A real CORKER of a pic, Tara!
