Description

After the big freeze and a week or so of snow, overnight it seemed there was the big melt, and the following night was blessed with incredibly clear skies... I just couldn't resist a bit of star trails photography :) This is home (the house is split btw), and yes that it my light, night owl that I am hehe :P Exposure was somewhere in the region of 25 minutes, and remarkably free of noise even at iso 250 (on a Canon 40d).. shot wide open at f/4, at 10mm on a Sigma 10-20 lens. I focused using Live View, zooming in on the window to adjust... no base exposure was needed as both the house and stars were at infinity focus. Hope that's of use to some :) Adam

Excellent Adam. I recall another of these that you did a year or so ago. I am favoriting this one in hopes of remembering to try this. And a mighty nice house to! Thanks for including your settings...big help.

Very effective spinning stars. I would not mind to have a bit of the highlight on the hedges but that is not a point of this picture so just ignore my coment on that.

This is a very well done shot of Polaris in the sky! If you want to brighten up anything like hedges, just wander through the scene during the exposure and hand-fire a small flash attachment. It will have no effect on the sky image, but it's a good way to add a bit of detail to the black areas if you want that.

What a marvel, is always beautiful to see star trails... incredibly, I do not see any airplane or satellite track. You were lucky!

What a marvellous effect you achieved in this shot, I'm sure everyone will want to try to replicate the effect. You live in a very beautiful house too.

Was about to say you shoulda turned out your light. Will have to pick your brains about some of this at a later date - such as is it trial and error for the exposure or do you have a rule of thumb? (no point in trying it in london hardly ever see stars in the first place). have you tried it from the bend in your drive to the right? would put north star at the top left "third" - not sure how the rest would pan out tho.
