Description

Canon 50mm f/1.8. Post in Photoshop. Rachel is up again for a few days and we went for a walk down by the beach wehre i took the previous few shots and i got her to pose for me in various places. She recently bought some fluffy gloves and a hat with sequins in it and she looks really cute and about 5 years old in them as you can see (i hope ;-) ). So i was taking full length "gap advert" style shots then i remembered seeing a similar sort of picture somewhere and decided to do this closeup style of portrait and i think it came out quite well - considering this is my first serious attempt at portraiture photography. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated on this shot - the crop is straight from the cam (something i am working on in my photography at the moment, ie thinking about the final crop when i am actually taking the shot rather than after) and i thought about cropping what you can see of the other eye out of it but that just looked strange so i left it. Thanks to st_fish, TwoPynts and short_ribs yesterday for actively critiquing the shot, it is the only way i will improve next time and i am grateful for their time and honesty. And i hope i can offer the same courtesy back at some point, if i havent done so anyway :)

Well - I'm willing to deliver constructive critique - but I can't. I just love the shot as it is and wouldn't change a darn thing.

Good quality shot buddy.... I dont like the crop in this though it's just that simple for me :( You kinda need that second eye I think.... That or to much of it is there if ya know what I mean? Other than that I'd say you are doing a wonderful job! :) Thanks for sharing!

Well well well... I disagree with Kai... I like the crop very much - something I often do with my cat portraits. And I also like the DOF - something I haven't tried with close-up portraits like this... the only thing I would try to add is some kind of "fill-flash" to pick up some more light in her eye. But its not essential - you did an excellent job!! 8;o)

the gray dress overall against her face makes this portrait really visible! excellent and original crop!

A truly captivating portrait. The shallow focus on her eye and little else is really dramatic. Not being a people shoot, I am not one to give advice, but if anything, I would say the blur of her nose makes it look overlarge. Perhas some selective dodging would de-emphasize it. The crop is good, but perhaps if she was moved to the right just little, there would be no distracting eye corner, and the nose issue may dissappear.
