Description

Everything on Tooth seems to have teeth. Even the small stones and pebbles are sharp, angular, and painful to walk upon. It is a young planet with jagged geological features. There are few large animals roaming its surface, but myriad small ones with voracious appetites; yet no less so than the vegetation, most of which are carnivorous. One way or the other, Tooth will eat you. Tom Carr is one of two-hundred-some scouts for the Anwan-Shigeta Corporation. The latter won the contract to do an ecological survey of Tooth. Ten years, since the first human actually set foot on Tooth and immediately regretted it. An emergency amputation of what was left below her left knee saved that intrepid explorer's life. Ten years, and the only settlement is the city created for the Survey Teams. No attempt to develop any more coloney sites after the cost of building that one. Mining with robotic equipment, might prove feasible, but very little else, was Tom's firm conviction. Two-hundred live scouts, but also nearly six-hundred dead ones in that girm decade. He knew he ought to get out of it. He was one of the old hands, and if you kept going out, it was only a matter of time. Tooth was no place to have your craft malfunction and crash. If you walked away from a crash, you'd get between two-hundred and four-hundred meters before you were consumed by something. Yeah, he needed to quit, alright. Tom told himself that every day as he climbed into his little air scooter. He was eligible for any number of desk or lab jobs. Trouble was, out here, there was always something new to discover--something that no human had ever seen before. It was addictive; he couldn't stop doing it. Even though he knew sooner or later one those discoveries would get him. ************************************************ Credits: Air scooter: "I.F.D. Orion" by Serrge (DAZ).
