The shadow fell over them like an eclipse of the sun. Ganz pulled on the semi-conscious woman's arm and whispered, "Lady--you had better be alive, or we're all dead." The River-king's eyes were like luminous spot-lights on Ganz. He backed slowly away from the woman, and said loudly, "We're trying to help your friend. We shot those robot bastards that hurt her! Understand?" Jav muttered as he backed away to the railing, "He's a fucking stupid monster,Ganz. He can't understan.." "GRRRROOOOWWWWWWRRRRGGGGGGGGGG!" The River-King glared hotly at Jav and snapped his teeth closed with a crash. Ganz shouted at Jav, "JAV! Shut the FUCK UP!" Jav put the 20mm HYVAP rifle down on the roof, and said, "Sorry! Sorry!" T-9 asked conversationally, "Should we call a doctor for the young miss? Or the Police? You did shoot down a Police robot,sir." Ganz sighed at the robot's stupidness. He remarked back tensely, "You are an idiot! The Police, fire departments, and doctors all died off sixty years ago! You call who you want. It doesn't matter." The River-King's long tongue extended and licked the girls foot. She giggled disjointedly and twitched She whispered, "I want to sleep in! Stop it." T-9 responded, "I'll summon a doctor and the police, sir" Ganz said tersly to the girl, "Wake up. WAKE UP!" A series of explosions sounded from below, followed by a huge plume of live steam shooting hundreds of feet into the afternoon sky. The roar of the huge Atmospheric Purifier stopped dead. A siren from the Purifier started up , but everyone already KNEW there was trouble. All the living generations of Trashtown had grew up with the whislting roar of the wind from the Atmospheric Purifier. The numbing silence was alarm enough. Ganz and Jav felt a cold wind in their guts. They knew what the quiet meant. The plant's power just shut down. The water pumps just died. The fresh air had just died. Trashtown just died. Jav said simply, in a numb voice, "Those dumb-asses in the lander just killed the town. They blew up the coolant lines. We can't fix it. What are we gonna do?" Ganz was struck numb. He coludn't answer immediately. T-9 remarked, "I have talked with the police. They instruct you to surrender the girl to them. They are in route now." "What the fuck are you babbling about, you broke down piece of shi--", Ganz broke off as the shadow of the lander approached them. "Damn, bassitches! Jav! Pick up your weapon. It's payback time. We might as well avenge ourselves on'em." The lander turned it's cannons on the River-King. The blasts caused the River-king to launch itself at the lander.
