Description

I think that all artists and creators wish for their creations to live (though by no means, do I know the thoughts of all artists out there). Especially when you've laboured long and hard on something. Where your blood, sweat and tears has gone into something, when you can sit back and look upon what you've done and you can smile and be content that you've 'created' something. Charles de Lint has a concept in his book, 'Memory and Dream'. The artist's creations come to life but never truly 'live' as they have no "red crow" beating within their chests. No creative soul of their own. I'll quote from [link] as it explains it rather well... Probably far better than I could have explained it. "We miss our dreams," Rosalind had explained once. "We have no blood, so we cannot dream." "But Isabelle dreams," Cosette had protested. "Isabelle has the red crow inside her." Sometimes Cosette would run madly across the fields, dangerously close to the cliffs, run and run until finally she fell exhausted to the turfy ground. Then she'd lie with her hair tangled in grass and roots and weeds and stare up into the sky, looking for a russet speck against the blue, red wings beating like the drumming of a pulse. "Red crow, red crow, fly inside me", she'd sing in her husky voice. From Memory and Dream Charles de Lint, New York:Tor Fantasy, 1995 Cosette and Rosalind are anima: the 'souls' or 'spirits' of some of the work that Isabelle, a painter, has created. They are alive in every particular but one -- they have no creative spirit of their own. They don't dream and they don't bleed and they don't create. The red crow stands for the creative spirit which they lack -- it's blood and dream and creative energy all in one." I've often worked on something and wished it would come to life... that somewhere along the line, it would attain some life, some self-sustaining passion and carry on evolving and growing. Sometimes, I think it does. But often, that life is stillborn and I try resurrect it, sustain it a little longer but eventually it fails. And the folders of my Projects directory grow and multiply, like headstones on the graves of my children. A creator's wish, is that his or her children should live, should attain a life of their own and grow to completion and fly, for the world to see their glory and radiance.
