Subject: White Hair textures

After seeing the DAZ promo video (check their site), I've been trying to recreate the white Gel Hair texture quick-n-dirty, without drawing a new one by hand. I've found that two things are obstacles. The texmap itself, and the transmap. I can't get the tex map to look like real hair, even though blonde/brown/red/black all look fine. I've used the default DAZ and Kozaburo's (much better) trans maps, and just can't get this to work. So...anybody got anything they've done that they'd like to share, or can point me in the right direction?? GrayMare

How 'bout converting the lightest text to greyscale?

I tried that. It looks muddy. I tried doing a negative image of the black texture, both with and without converting to various color depths of black&white first. That usually looks really dirty or like plastic. I tried using the trans map as a texture too. That looks like plastic. The problem probably has to do with the use of white rather than a color. Thinking that, I tried really light shades of blue and cream...not any better. I kinda hope Betsy from DAZ will hop in here and offer the tex they used :) GrayMare

Have you raised the ambient intensity?

Marque, seems like you nailed it. White would have to be lit properly, too, one would think.

Hope no one can see my roots...lol Actually I just did some snipping here and there, she didn't have time to go to the salon. 8^) I took pieces from the milman grey hair texture, figure since I own it and I'm not selling or giving anything away I'm ok. I actually did it too fast, but it seems to work. Marque

I used the regular gel hair transmap, just changed the texture map. Marque

Thanks Marque, that's it! I only wish I had some gray hair texture. Come to think of it, I don't have any gray hair textures, or I'd have done this myself. Exactly which texture did you use as your base? Can you or other folks make recommendations for well-done white/gray hair textures that work well with transmapped hair? GrayMare

I got a hair pack for Mike a while back and it has a MMWedgeGrey texture in it that I snipped from. Costs $6.26 here at the store. No transmaps but I used the one from the gel hair and it worked fine. http://www.renderosity.com/softgood.ez?ViewSoftgood=259 Hope that helps. Marque

If you go to the wedge hair product page at DAZ, you can get FREE grey bald and dark hair textures. Then you could 'adapt' them for your own textures.

Thanks, You guys "da bomb", to mis-quote my middle school-age son...maybe I should never try to quote him after all. I do appreciate it, now I gotta work on this stuff.
