Subject: Props: Salt and Pepper shakers

Looking for salt and pepper shakers, old lead-glass style. Free if possible. Looking for a friend.

Wow, this is awesome. I'm the one who requested the S&P shakers for use in a project but couldn't find any that were free, that had salt and pepper in them. I'm touched by your generosity, SamTherapy, and can't wait to see what you come up with. Thank you so much!

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sat, 26 March 2016 at 10:30 PM

The tops are a bit fiddly, thanks to the spiral track for the screw thread. I've roughed it out and will tidy it all up tomorrow. The glass part is done.

Need to get some sleep; it's 4.24 am here. A quick screen grab from Wings to show you the progress:

You're welcome, Anim8dtoon. These will be available as a freebie but Boni will get 'em first. Shaker.jpg

Way Cool!

Non-visual update. I was just about to quit and get to bed when I thought, "To hell with it", threw it into MLab and made a boolean of the cap with a spring section. The result is a N-Gon mess but nothing a little retopo can't handle.

Later, gang.

Sam, probably too late but you should have made the glass with thickness if possible (a manifold surface; intrude command might have worked). Just thinking about realistic refraction...

Yep, indeed I have. Take a look at me Daleks; most of the lamps have thickness in the lenses, for much the same reason. I used an internal Extrude, so as to keep a nice smooth inner, as in the real things.

I also reckoned it'd be useful to have an inner in case the pots were needed to be filled with stuff.

...especially given that refraction is so important in pbr and the particular visual qualities of a thick, leaded glass. Just musing...

Kind of fittingly funny if you think about it, what with Daleks and the salt n pepper shakers thing. Lol.

This is looking GREAT, SamTherapy--thank you! Can you include an option to fill them with salt and pepper as well? I hope I'm not asking too much of you. What modeling software are you using, by the way?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sun, 27 March 2016 at 7:11 AM

@ EldritchCellar - Yep, the point did cross me mind. :D I did think of making some Daleks with holes in the domes. o.O

@ Anim8tdtoon - Sure thing. How about some cylindrical thingy which you can texture appropriately? I use Wings, which is what I use for all my stuff. There's a very useful extension/plug in (which seems to be unavailable now, sadly) called MeshLab (MLab). MLab has a lot of features not present in vanilla Wings, such as boolean functions, which are great for adding in extra detail.

I can't wait to see these shakers rendered. The wireframe model has me literally drooling, it's so beautifully done!

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sun, 27 March 2016 at 11:37 AM

@ Boni - yes, but not all at one go, thanks to small noisy children.

@ Anim8tdtoon - You're too kind. Doing a render now, which is taking forever. Still have the inside salt/pepper cylinder thingy to do and the pepper pot lid. The salt pot lid has one hole; I'm putting 9 or so in the pepper pot lid.

Here's a render. I used BB's shaders from the Dreamland Models Patio Set.

I'll finish the models tonight, and get 'em packed up.

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

While I'm about it, does anyone have a decent looking glass shader that doesn't take a geological age to render? ISTR BB posted about using refelct and refract to generate a fresnel effect but can I buggery find it.

Oh, I use Poser Pro 2012. So no Superfly stuff for me.

Sam, think I managed to track down ggalien's Manifold Lab custom version for wings, you said Meshlab (which is an unrelated to wings standalone application). Anyway, looks like he's still developing it... I didn't look at it, haven't tried it as I use modo for the more exotic non box modeling stuff, but it's the devs original drop box for Manifold Lab and it seems like it's been recently updated. Figured maybe if you were interested...

...and here's the old relevant official Wings3d forum thread with clarification on the particulars.

Thank you, EldritchCellar. ManifoldLab, of course. Thank you for the info and also for the search. I tried what I could think of with no luck. You seem to have hit the proverbial nail on the head.

Wow, Sam! It looks wonderful! I wouldn't fret too much about the texture as I'll be rendering it in Reality 4.2.1/LuxRender which has awesome glass materials as presets. I can't wait to use the shakers in my scene. Thank you for taking the time to model it!

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sun, 27 March 2016 at 9:37 PM

Okey dokey. Glad you like it. I've just modelled an internal thingy, which you can texture and scale as you please for salt or pepper. Just need to finish a few bits and bobs, then I can shoot it over to you. Please sitemail me the addy to send it to.

Thank you Kristi.

When I was new to this community, I was really impressed with the generosity of the members and the amount of freestuff they had taken the time to create. I downloaded and used a lot of it - much of it is still in my Runtime to this day, and often used - so it's great to be part of that tradition and to give back to the good people out there in Poser land.

Besides which, I needed a break from modelling amplifier cables. :D
