Subject: How do I put multiple characters into the same scene?

willanik ( ) posted Tue, 29 December 2015 at 7:13 PM · edited Fri, 03 April 2026 at 8:20 PM

Help requested for this newbie please. I am getting started in DS 4.8. I have set up a few characters, using Daz and third party content and all based on V4 and M4. Each time I have a new character to my liking (hair, eyes etc.) I save it as a scene.

Now I want to use two or more of these ‘customised’ characters together in new scenes, and I cannot work out how get more than one character into the same scene! I can find nothing in the manual or on You Tube. I tried File/Merge and that gave me two characters inextricably combined….amusing, but not much use. Can someone please direct me to a tutorial or give me a few steps to achieve this?

Many thanks.

Okay willanik you will need to save you character sets as a preset and a wardrobe so you can bring them into the main scene. I will find the correct tutorials and put the links here. This way you can load your actors as required.

The easiest way to do it is when you have the main scene open, go to the "file" dropdown menu and select 'Merge'. Then navigate the dialog to the saved character scene and select it, then it will put the character scene into your main scene.

Thanks guys,

Wheatpenny - I have tried this approach with and without the initial character selected and it always binds the new character to the same space as the initial character. I do not know how to unbind them.....

Jeff - Gave your idea a try too. Selected the character and the tried to save as a Character preset, and the error message that came up says I need to "select a TriAx Weight Mapped figure in the scene" to do this. I have no idea what that is and am wondering whether it does not apply to old Gen4 figures.

Both way should work fine I probably do it a little differently as I usually save a wearable and a character preset for future use. Mainly so I can find them because once I move the project scene files out who knows where they will end up :-). The character(Actor) gives me the figure and loads like any other A,V,M or G figure as in naked. The wearable gives me the cloth and *hair (*from memory) and it is only a matter of instead of "Save Scene" you choose the option - wearable, character or even a pose if required. Choose in the dialogue box what you want included in the save and that is it. Once saved I find it in my content library under actor and wearables with a two click load. I tried to look it up in the user's guide it covers shaping and pose but it is a bit light on for detail.

Same thing file Save As and right down the bottom is depreciated menu click there and choose your options but you should get it to save.

Thanks Johnny, Tried the character save via the depreciated section. When I tried to bring the .dsa file into a new scene, or a scene with another character already present, it would not paste unless I first selected the existing character and - Bingo - it overwrote that character!

Have not yet found how to make my Gen4 characters into TriAx Weight Mapped figures - any suggestions how to do this so I can see if it fixes the problem?

Thanks again, Willanik

Yes so you can load a second base character in your scene and select it then let it overwrite that while keeping the original. I think it asks so if you had 3 V4's loaded you can choose which one for preset. Just make sure you don't have a character selected already to add new and select the chosen character to apply a preset

Is it asking you to make them into TriAx or to select the TriAx?.

Well, I experimented with Gen4 then Genesis and Genesis 2 and they all react differently. By accident I found that on Gen 4 I could click and drag to separate the two base characters I loaded. They still retain some links, but I can then merge preset, subset and .duf files, and have limited manouverability of the resulting characters.

Will now continue my learning journey. Thanks for all the supportive advice.
