Subject: So...so! Do we have SSS in Poser 8?

evilded777 ( ) posted Mon, 10 August 2009 at 10:18 AM · edited Sat, 15 November 2025 at 6:47 AM

Just heard the news about P8; I haven't been doing any rendering for a while... and just sort of came back to hear the news about P8 and DS3A, etc.

Neat things in P8 it seems... but I want to know if we have gotten SSS yet, or are we still faking it?

Thanks!

Still faking it, I believe.

Poser 8 does not have SSS or any other feature that is not advertised on Smith Micro's website.

http://store.smithmicro.com/home.tpl?group=store_product&sku=PSR8HDVD&prodview=otherinfo

It does however have wxPython, which may allow many features to be added by third-party script writters. Time will tell if someone can add SSS.

Can anyone suggest a link to explain this "fake SSS" issue...

I'd appreciate it

At RDNA look through the forums for BagginsBill's threads on his VSS (I think that is correct) skin shaders.

we dont have SSS.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

lets hope in poser 9

I guess I have seen "real" SSS with Maxwell Render, but it's unbelievably slow! Maybe Poser is better off without it. Ahaha?

The VSS thread is here at Rendo... though he's probably got it being talked about at RDNA too. Here's the big Rendo thread.

Thanks everybody for the input.

I can READ Lkendall; but you never know what features might not be highlighted by marketing that really ought to be.  And since this is something I would very much like to see in Poser, I figured I would ask if anyone knew the correct answer.   I just heard about P8 yesterday, because I have apparently been under a rock somewhere.

you dont hae to use it he he :)

but SSS is not so much slower.

FrankT ( ) posted Mon, 10 August 2009 at 3:00 PM

SSS is a lot slower on all the render engines I've ever used it on (Vue and Blender so far)
Not tried the Fast Skin shader on Mental Ray because I don't have it but that uses maps anyway so is probably a lot faster

well fast skin shader is very good IMO. it gives very good results. not everything needs to be physical correct to give us good results.

**"I can READ"

Of course you can. My post was not addressed specifically to you. The title of this thread mentions SSS and Poser 8 together, and has already been read by over 200 people. Many like yourself will have just heard about Poser 8. Not all of them will have read the features posted at Smith Micro (hence the link), and not all of them will have already bought the program and looked at the available features.

Marketing should always tell us more, but they rarely do. To their credit, SM allowed beta-testers, content providers, etc. to talk about the product before it was released. So, many who have been following threads here for more than a month already knew what the program would and would not have in it.

BagginsBill has already said he will be updating his VSS shader to take advantage of improved lighting and some other features. According to those who use it, the version of VSS that he has already released works in Poser 8.

I continue to ask for a few channels on the root node that can be programmed with Python scripts, and maybe even able to call external files. I would also like to see a node that had a programmable number of input and output channels that could be programmed with Python scripts. With tools like these third party programmers could extend the Materials Room to include many desirable features.

What is this "fast skin shader" you speak of?

politely snipped

Perhaps it just seemed that way, early in the morning with not enough caffiene in my system.  You know how easy it is to mistake intent on a forum.  My apoligies for snapping.

I believe this is a material shader thingy in Mental Ray. AFAIK, 3dsmax and Maya and Softimage have Mental Ray.
In other words, it's not in Poser.

still hooked to real life and enjoying the siesta!

Blender doesn't have raytraced SSS but light map based  and is very fast and good, I wish poser has this way of SSS not the ugly fast scatter

ice-boy ( ) posted Fri, 14 August 2009 at 7:13 PM

blender's SSS is pretty good.

FrankT ( ) posted Fri, 14 August 2009 at 8:55 PM

I don't use the Blender renderer so I've never really had that much practice with the SSS shader but it's supposed to be good
