Hey there Daf I'm still new at Carrara, But I think I have a answer to your question. You may continue rendering with Ray Tracer, all you have to do Is select that light source In your scene with the properties tray (Spot light, Bulb light) What ever that source may me, then click on effects In that tray. One of the option should let you fix that grainy effect on your output.
Another thing to try is turning off Light Smart Sampling on your Renderer settings. I've seen that do what you describe. Eric Winemiller Digital Carvers Guild Freeware and commercial 3D extensions http://digitalcarversguild.com

Hi I'm working on a scene- a semi-dark room- with low light and I'm getting an overall grainy effect. The dark areas, as well as the light, are grainy. I'm mostly relying on the ambient light but I have a few bulbs set at very low levels and a spot set up to hilight a particular object. I never had this problem with Bryce so I must have some settings wrong somewhere...any ideas? I've played with the "bias" of some of the lights but didn't notice any difference. I've only rendered with the "RayTracer" I haven't tried the "Hybrid". Thanks Daf
