GWeb, I'm not sure what you mean by symmetrical control. If you check out some of the movies of Hexagon on Eovia's website you see a creature being modeled symmetrically. As the right side is pushed and pulled and added to, the left side updates in real time. That's what I think of when I hear Symmetrical control, but maybe I'm misinterpreting you.
Thread: Hexagon vs. Silo - Opinions | Forum: Carrara
I was a beta tester for Hex and recently got Silo for work.
Here's the main difference for me between the two:
Silo seems to be geared totally for box modelling whereas Hex is geared for box modelling and modelling from polylines. If you are someone who imports Illustrator paths to build your models then you are out of luck with Silo. The specs on the Silo upgrade doesn't mention Illustrator import either. Hex on the other hand will import Illustrator paths(although not ones originally made in FreeHand unfortunately). Hex also has deformers which Silo doesn't.
Hex has a fair bit more functions than Silo but you pay a price for it: It costs a little more and requires faster hardware than Silo. Don't get me wrong, Hex ran fine on my G4 mac but Silo whizzed through anything I threw at it with ease. I think both are fine modellers as is modo but when you pay as much as they are asking for modo it should be better.

Thread: DAZ scene into Carrara | Forum: Carrara
Hey Dex, all the models I've bought (about 8) made BY Daz have imported seamlessly into CS Pro.
I did purchase a skin texture set through Daz that, although it came through all right, always looked weird, too shiney. The skin texture looked okay in Poser though.
So there's my 2 cents.
Daz products made by Daz: no problem
Daz products made by third party producers: problems with 1
Also: I've never bought scenes from them, only character models
One other thing: The times I've had to talk with someone directly at Daz about any problems have been very productive. They seemed to be pretty cool.

Thread: booleans in Carrara 4 | Forum: Carrara
From Carrara basics and Wings to Lightwave and Maya Complete, virtually every 3D program, no matter the cost, has problems with booleans. The reason, I'm told, is that they are all "Surface modelers". Do enough booleans on the same object and something will start going crazy after a while. Form-Z is the exception, it is a "solids modeler" and I watched the Form-Z guys demo their program at Siggraph as it not only did mega booleans and not break a sweat but they actually could go back and move booleaned areas later on. I talked briefly with one of their programmers later and he told that it was because Form-Z worked with solids.

Mark, Mark, Mark. Once again you put me to shame. Fearlessly going where others haven't even thought. I guess it's time for me to pull out the manual again. I'm gonna ask a question that I think I already know the answer to: These techniques could be used for print work too, couldn't they?

Thread: Forced to move to Lightwave? | Forum: Carrara
The San Antonio Express-News bought me a copy of Lightwave 2 years ago and I learned it well enough to produce some work for the paper but went back to Carrara because of Carrara's strengths and Lightwave's weaknesses. Lightwave costs more but cost doesn't factor in when your employer buys your software. Lightwave was designed from the ground up to do one thing, 3D animation for broadcast and film. It never was intended to be used in print. I have watched my co-workers take more than an hour to create images in Lightwave that I created in under 20 minutes in Carrara. Many times in Lightwave you have to take 3 steps to do something when Carrara would only take one. The reason for this is mainly because of all the heavy-duty animation tools LW is crammed with. Don't get me wrong, I think Lightwave is a wonderful program and many print artists have created some fine illustrations using it. In spite of the interface. I'm just sending this message out hoping it will alert Eovia's marketers of this potentially huge market. Go get 'em.

Who decides what becomes the industry standard? The Society of News Design (SND) has a huge influence (they co-sponsored the event you see in the flyer). The Associated Press has an even bigger influence and recently sent all their subscribers a newsletter outlining a test they performed on what 3D app they felt was the best. Cinema 4D was their pick, Carrara wasn't even tested.

Publishing it? Hell, I'll feel lucky if I ever finish it. It seems to take forever. Well, if it ever does get finished, Tom and I were hoping to take it around to some of the bigger comic book companies. We'd want to keep all the rights to it though. Thanks for the comments. This is sort of a dream project of mine. I've always wanted to do a comic book. Oh yeah, one other Carrara connection: the typewriter is the stock typewriter included in Carrara's objects. I rendered it twice, photorealistic and non, and did a bit of Photoshop work.

Dex, thank you so much for the info. This is the kind of inaccuracies I'm trying to find. I have only driven through New Mexico a couple of times so I wasn't sure.
