Subject: How do you install the Poser 4.03 update correctly?

Could there be any stupider question? I've done it about 5 or 6 times and maybe wrecked my machine, but I don't think it's in there right.

System: Sony PC 1500MHz, 360+ram-- not enough, I know-- 15 G on the program HD, two more HDs at 60 and 70G. Running Windows ME. I have an older PC running 98 and I had no luck installing it there, not that I want to run it on a 450Mhz.

What happens is the Metacreation files never go away, and nothing works unless it is installed in Metacreation's Runtime files. I keep getting these errors of files being too recent a date for the program-- sounds to me like it's not updated, although it boots saying Curious Labs 4.03+. Am I supposed to have 2 Runtime sets of files??

The program shows up under the Curious Labs menu in Program files from the desktop but it's not there, it's still in the Metacreation's folder. Did I mention, I'd done this 6 times!!

At least I'm getting a crash course on what file goes where in Runtime. Poser doesn't recognize half of it, mind you, and I'm not sure if that's because what I have is faulty or the installation was.

Oh, one last thing, I installed it all from scratch. I just got a fresh set of disks from the company as I used it years ago on Mac.

I also don't seem to be able to uninstall the damn thing as the program can't find it's install log.

I'd be very grateful for some help, as I too would like to play around with naked dreamy-lit women and men in over-decorated temples. [don't say that, they'll let you sink]

Oh, and I'm talking to myself, I'm so frustrated.

The 4.03 update will install in the Metacreations folder (or where ever you've install Poser 4), that's normal. The menu is just a shortcut, the actual files will be in your original Poser folder. It will update some of the items in the runtime folder, but you still have the same location, including all the 3rd party items you've installed. As far as the too recent thing, that's probably from files created in Poser Pro Pack, which shows up as version 4.2, and will still give you that error with 4.03. In Windows, the update can create a problem because it doesn't update the shortcut correclty, specifically, the "start in" item in the shortcut's properties doesn't point to the correct folder. This can cause GUI problems. Other than that though, I think you're doing it right, at least as far as the update itself. For a new fresh install, it will (I think) want to install in a curious labs folder. As far as uninstalling goes, hmmm, well, what I would do is install the new version in it's own folder, move or resintall all the freestuff and purchased items to the new runtime, then delete the old metacreations folder. Poser uses the Runtime relative to where the program file is located, so you can have multiple installs on the HD without trouble. Regards- Lemurtek

you will still get an error message of "such & such item is a newer version..etc" if you have things that were created with pro pack and you are using P4. ignore this, pro pack came out after the patch. (btw if you wish to avoid the messages, open the item once, skip past the message, & then resave into your library)

Thank you soooo much. I just spent a few hours earlier tonight moving things from the Curious Labs folder back into the Metacreations one, because that seems the most stable-- as well as the one DAZ products go to automatically.

Now, I have to go in and make sure all the pngs are gone. I know they are Pro Pack.

Double thanks, because now I can also question my seller as to why his characters aren't loading. I'm going to try to avoid uninstalling if I can possibly avoid it. It gets all befuddled then.

Thank you once again for the very very quick response.

It sounds like things are working ok now? Don't worry about png files if they came with a download. Many artists have Poser Pro pack and routinely give us stuff with the png files. Poser 4.03 won't use them, but it won't choke on them either. If you don't have rsr files, you won't see the icon in your library. You'll see that shrugging guy. Just load the item, then resave it to the library to get the rsr thumb.
