Subject: Transparency problem

mdbruffy ( ) posted Sat, 04 July 2020 at 9:02 PM ยท edited Sat, 04 April 2026 at 12:15 AM

I'm using V3 and trying to use the V3 morphing fantasy dress. But I can't get the transparency map I've made to work right. If you'll look at the areas circled in red, they should be gone like the rest of the areas. Anyone have any ideas?

can you post up your transmap so I can download and test? Also post up a screen shot of your mat settings.

What version of Poser are you using?

I'm guessing it's the gamma correction settings on the transparency map. Old versions of Poser set everything to 1. Newer versions have the gamma correction at 2.2 for the texture map, but the transparency map should be a custom setting of 1.

If that's not it, post a screen shot of the material settings, and tell us what version of Poser you're using.

I'm using the latest update: Poser 11.3.818. I've never had to deal with Gamma settings- I don't even know where they are. Material settings. You'll find that the transparency is set to 2. I've always used it and never had a problem before.

Reload your transmap. The gamma setting is available on load selection. Set to custom 1. Also change your texture filtering to crisp or none. Trans map only needs to be set to 1. in transparency value.

If you click on "Image source" - as if you were going to change the trans map - you'll see an option to set a custom gamma correction in the menu that pops up. Tick "Custom Gamma Value," and make sure it's set to 1.00

mdbruffy ( ) posted Sat, 04 July 2020 at 10:06 PM

Transmap has been reloaded and the gamma setting checked. Gamma is set to 1.0. Look at the areas I've marked with an "X". This looks like the map isn't meeting up like it should- and it's only taking one cuff trim.

I'll load up that transmap and see what it's doing.

Do you want the map i used? I had to take the dress into UV mapper to make one.

randym77 ( ) posted Sat, 04 July 2020 at 10:28 PM

It does look like you have to expand the transparency map on the cuff and the shoulders. I dimly recall that this was an issue with old Poser products being used in newer versions of Poser. You had to "color outside the lines," or the seams would show. Something about the way Firefly handled textures, vs. the old Poser 4 renderer.

People used to get around it by ticking "texture filtering," but that was a bad solution. It blurred the textures. The correct solution was to expand the texture beyond the lines on the texture map.

I think the parts that aren't fully transparent are a different problem. The material room settings aren't right.

Here's the texture map I had to make in UV mapper:

The map you posted works for me. With similar results, except I don't have those semi-transparent areas.

ghostship2 ( ) posted Sat, 04 July 2020 at 10:30 PM

yeah, the transmap is borked. this is what I get with it. I can fix it for you if you like.

I got similar results.

The parts that are only semi-transparent...check to make sure transparency falloff is 0 if you want them completely transparent.

Well,I also found this out: The texture map doesn't meet at the shoulders:

How do you fix this? This is the way UV mapper made it. If you can fix it that'd be great.

ghostship2 ( ) posted Sat, 04 July 2020 at 10:42 PM

as you can see from this shot with the seam guide layered over the transparency you can tell nothing lines up. the sleeves have a bit poking out. layers.jpg

I see that now yes. That explains the sleeve cuff. What about the shoulders not matching up? Is that just a glitch with UV mapper? I think I need to go back and start over now that I have a proper map to use. Thank you for that.

I don't get it. I never had UV Mapper (Classic) fail like this before. I'll start over with the new map in the morning.

Paint your transmap in a modeler with 3d painting capabilities (blender is one) and save yourself all the headaches and guesswork. These kinds of problems are a thing of the past.

I don't know a modeler with 3D painting capabilities. I use Sketch-up a lot for basic things and I have a slight nodding awareness with Sculptis. I've never used Blender. But as soon as I can find the time, I'll give it a try.

Just watch a few YouTube vids. Painting is pretty easy in there.

for the part that is partly transparent under the arms and between the breasts, set your transparency edge to 1.
