Thanks for this fantastic tip!
Bought the magazine yesterday ( 139.- D.KR., much more than £6), and installed the Carrara package. I almost wish I hadn't, I didn't get to bed before 04 at night :)
Two weeks ago I got an offer from Smiths Micro with Poser 7 at 80% discount (some 50 $) and bought it, discarded my very old Poser 5. That's also really cool.
Now, I SHOULD FOCUS ON MY VUE SKILLS instead of all this mumbo-jumbo :)
Naaa, of course it's great, and a great expansion of my toolbox I think.
Thanks again
This is a complete insult to everybody who bought C7Pro. Imagine spending a few 100's of dollars to get 7Pro and then... in 6/12 months time, see it for 6$; wouldn't you feel cheated?
In addition to being unethical, it is also self destructive for DAZ. As soon as people realize that by just being one version behind others you save 100's of dollars, people rightly do so and this means that bit by bit DAZ has less and less resources to develop Carrara.
DAZ is a real kiss of death for programs. They killed Hexagon, they are just paying lip service to Bryce and they are throwing away Carrara future. The only program they are interested in is... unbelievable, isn't it? Studio.
Bye...
GIMP 2.7.4, Inkscape 0.48, Genetica 3.6 Basic, FilterForge 3 Professional, Blender 2.61, SketchUp 8, PoserPro 2012, Vue 10 Infinite, World Machine 2.3, GeoControl 2
Well, speaking as someone who paid to purchase Carrara 7 at full price, I don't feel cheated. I didn't know DAZ's pattern of releasing free former versions to magazines, but I also don't like to wait a year and half to upgrade. I quickly bought Carrara 8 pro when it came out and I don't feel any regret about how I purchased version 7. I'm like that with movies too; if I want to see something I go and see it in the theatre right away, I don't like to wait for it to come out on dvd. And for books I will shell out nearly 3 times as much for the hardback version rather than wait the year-plus for the less costly paperback version.
I don't think DAZ has respected Carrara particularly to this point, or realized what they've got, but on the other hand a DAZ employee mentioned that Carrara 8 has been the biggest and most successful software launch in the history of DAZ up to this point, so I'm thinking they will start hopefully paying more attention and devoting more resources to its development. Even so, I don't think DAZ is killing Carrara though. On the other hand, it looks pretty clear that they don't care much about developing Hex. But Bryce seems to have some weight for them, as evidenced by the new version being beta tested now.
I second "jonstark" a long way, you shouldn't get bothered this kind of development. You can often find something you purchased coming on sale etc. some time later. For that same reason, being somewhat of a miser :) and contrary to "jonstark", I seldom rush in and buy right away, I wait and see. And it pays off most of the time. Then again, I bought some stuff at Content Paradise (some animals collections) at a bargain, but now they are giving them away, piece by piece (a tip, BTW). That was a bit annoying of course, but that's how it goes.

...and those who sell products this way self-torpedo their earnings by teaching customers that by waiting they will get better prices, jeopardizing cash flow and therefore future development.
Well, it's completely idle talk as I have ditched any hope in DAZ behaving professionaly and not just as a barbie dolls peddler (and, needless to add, have scheduled my buys accordingly).
Off with Blender 2.53

They just released a new version of Bryce, looks pretty good but Vue still eats it for lunch.
Bryce is public domain software compared to Vue Infinite. The Bryce renders still look like Bryce renders. The "mirror sphere floating above reflective water" render test is still a challenge for Bryce, and still slow at that. Bryce is still in the catagory of free software.

Another thing that is in the "public domain software" category is POV-Ray which can be used to create the renders you see at this address and let's not forget about another toy called "Blender".

While flying back to sweden i bought myself some airport literature - 3d Artist, which in this months issue features a drea horvarth interview/tutorial.
It also features Carrera 7 Pro - full version, for free as they want people to upgrade it to v8.
probably worth 6 quid i would say!
