Subject: Collision Detection freeze

Magnatude ( ) posted Thu, 16 July 2009 at 12:05 PM · edited Sat, 11 July 2026 at 12:26 AM

Ok, I'm having a little problem...

I have a Car being followed by 2 weird UFO craft. I have a camera positioned and looking at a helper.  Everything is currently linked to the car as I want the camera in front of the car focused a the passenger side and the flying UFO's are flying behind the car in pursuit.

Now I want to drag the ensemble to the "spline road" so I turn on Collision Detection and attempt to drag the car ensemble down to the road.... FREEZE.... wait....

Carrara comes to its senses again... and I notice that the car has not moved... so I drag it down again....FREEZE.... same thing nothing happened.

Can someone help me clarify what it is I'm doing wrong. and how I will be able to drag the car down to touch the road without it going through?

EDIT: I guess in the end I could just punch in the numbers but I just want to know if this is typical or my procedure is the wrong way to do this.

i suspect that the Sports Car group's camera or UFO group bounding box is hitting the ground. My first guess is the camera, though. Try scaling the camera down.

Thanks Mark, I tried your suggestion and scaled the camera... however I get the same result.
Freeze, Carrara recovers and I see there is no movement, try again and the same thing.

This occurs in both C6pro and C7pro

another screen of my scene for reference. I must have some kind of setting wrong or something.

The car is actually not touching the road in the shot tho it look like it from the angle, its still a few feet higher above the spline-road

EDIT I thought it might be the target helper so I scaled that too, but get the same result.

Ok, I did some test in another scene, and I assembled a group of objects together and added a Target helper and then a camera. Collisions work great...   created another grouped object and dragged that into the first group... still works good.

Something is odd, did a test by draging in the viper. no prob... collisions worked, then I grabbed the existing groups into the viper. WORKS...

Now here is what happens if you save the group as a car file and then create a new scene with a terrain (zeroed so its flat)

I import the car group collection.. and BOOM I get the freeze when I try to use collisions.

Now the reason I saved my car setup with the UFO's was to get everything set up in a smaller room and then import it into a larger scene to make it easier to construct my set without dealing with vast distances.

Is there a way to import prepared .car files without having this problem or is this a bug?
