Subject: Boeing 727 dxf files

boeing ( ) posted Sun, 20 July 2008 at 9:21 PM · edited Tue, 14 July 2026 at 1:00 AM

Hello, after watching Mark Bremmer's excellent tutorials on VTC and the splin modeling, I've decided to start producing my favorite airplane...the 727.  I have a 3 sided view in dxf format, but any ideas on how to get this into carrara 6 pro?  I've tried but it disappears.

Thanks

You'll need to export the dxf 2D format into something that Carrara likes - .tif, .jpg etc.

Thanks Mark, I downloaded the DXF files, what would be a good program to use to convert them to Jpeg?

Well, if they are the actually the 2D "drafting" type of files, Adobe Illustrator will do it. There may some free converters on the web if you don't have Illustrator although. Also, if you can open and preview the dxf files with an CAD program, (CAD programs should be able export to .bmp or .tif too), you can always  do a screen grab of the plan view.

But then...Hexagon imports DXF files and its about $100 bucks, plus its not a bad modeler...could that be an option?

boeing ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 4:44 PM

Hello Boeing, yes Hexagon will import the DXF 3 view drawing, hope this helps.

Wow, I bought Hex and not only does it bring in the DXF file but it added points to the splines....fantastic!  Thanks Boeing

Irfanview will open DXF files, and just about any other graphic/vector file, and convert them to .bmp, tif, or whatever, and it's free. -  www.irfanview.com

ABViewer is supplied as a free-to-try application. For using it permanently, you have to register the application. It is a more specialized viewer and will open and view DXF vector and 3D files.

Cool, looks like Hex solved your problem. It's a great modeler with a few quirks and flaws, but definitely usable.

Hey 50parsecs, thanks a bunch for the cool links!  Yup, I have to say thus far I am falling in love with Hex, I just created a UFO within a couple of mouse clicks and I just started using it!  I am going through a tutorial on VTC, but will be looking for other tutorials as well.... for a $100 bucks, this program is amazing!
