Subject: Carrara crashes when loading scene with poser content

Krewz ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2008 at 3:41 AM · edited Tue, 14 July 2026 at 2:08 AM

I'm using the Carrara 6.1 trial for Windows. I'll be using it mostly to render poser animations.

My problem is that when I open or import a poser scene (.pz3 file) that has a lot of keyframes, then save it as a .car file, then try to reopen the .car file, Carrara will either crash or hang, making me kill it in the task manager.

It usually works when I save and load shorter and simpler scenes, however.

Is this an issue for anyone else? I'd like to get the full version, but if it can't handle complex poser scenes then it won't be worth it for me.

Hi Krewz, can you tell us how many keyframes? Then we can more accurately try things on our end :)

I have a poser scene with only Terai Yuki 2 and hair (and all the default lights and cameras loaded with a poser scene).  It is 20 seconds long running at 30 fps.  EVERYTHING on TY is keyed: every property and morph channel on every body part for every frame has a key (much like a bvh file).

I've also applied the motion (its a walk cycle) to other poser figures (A4, V3) in case it was something particular about a non-Daz figure.  This time instead of opening a .pz3 I would load the cr2 and motion pose from the content browser.  The stuff seems to load ok, and saving it as a .car file seems to work, but when I try to open the new .car file it will hang or crash every time.

Krewz - I created a poser scene with the default Simon figure, added a 20 sec walk, saved it, imported to C6Pro, saved the file, opened the file, and network rendered it - all worked fine. I'll try making the animation more complex and see what happens, but all is good so far :)

Still testing - created a scene with 3 characters with conforming clothing, added walk cycles in P7 - saved file, imported in C6Pro, saved file, loaded again no problems.  It does take a few minutes to load even though it looks like nothing is happening, so maybe you need to wait longer?

Thanks, Discoseven, I appreciate you taking the time to test this for me.  I think what's happening is that a script I'm using is corrupting the scene somehow, adding something in that Carrara can't handle.

I've been keyframing the figure in poser, then using this short script from PhilC here:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2736524

to add keys to the whole figure.  I then switch the figure's limbs from IK to FK in poser since Carrara can't handle Poser's IK.

When I just used the walk designer, the scene saves and load ok in Carrara, but when I use Phil's script it must add something that Carrara doesn't like.  I'm trying to find out what now.

I think I solved the problem.  The script I was using would key everything on the figure, even blank morph channels.  It must have added something somewhere that Carrara can't handle.

I wrote a script that only keys the rotation parameters on all the body parts, and the translate parameters on the hip.

Now I can animate in poser with IK, run the script to key everything, switch everything to FK, import the file into Carrara, turn constraints off, and the animation will run just as well in Carrara as it originally did in poser, and the file saves and loads fine.

Thanks Disco, your idea of using simon with the walk designer gave me the idea that the script I was using was screwing up the file.
