can someone tell me what happened and how do I fix this?

It looks like there are no creased edges to define the object prior to engaging smoothing.

At least 'smoothing' happened. But in case this is a space ship, you could considering approaching black holes with more caution...

well it's actually the rear of a car.  It was modeled in Hex then inported to carrara.  I think it happened when I creased the fin area but I'm not sure. I just saw it after saving some time ago and I just went to work on it last night... little lost.. thinking I should un crease?

Smoothing was done in Hex... though I creased in Carrara... guessing that's it now that Ithink about it

Looks like a nGon or what ever they call a multi sided polygon these days.

You should quad that up in hex and try again.
