Subject: Moving to Mac and Poser 6

darhorn ( ) posted Tue, 06 June 2006 at 9:55 AM · edited Thu, 05 March 2026 at 11:49 AM

Okay, I have been out of the graphics scene for a bit... my computer was getting painfully slow for rendering.. probably a combo of the hi res models and the fluff on the machine.

I just got a new machine and switched over to OS X, and then upgrade to Poser 6 from P4, I have a question about my older content.  I have over 8 GB of content and would hate to lose it.
One challenge will be getting it to the new machine but i got that solved through the use of my ipod, but will the content work?

I am looking at the P6 character lib, and all the files are .crz, i am used to them being .cr2  is this a mac issue or p6?  and will p6/mac read my older content?

I dont always have all my older installer files, and a lot of them are exe's in any case... the easiest thing to do is to copy over the libraries/geometries and textures folders and merge them in..

any suggestions?
thanks
Darrin

As far as the .crz, those files are compressed by P6 (zipped). There are probably .fcz and a bunch of other files with a z at the end of the extensions. I believe there's a way to unzip them within P6 but I'm afraid someone else will have to address that. I only know what they are, not how to get deal with them. BTW, welcome to the Mac side. hey!  a mac forum?  will have to check it out :)  will P6 read the uncompressed files also?   still really new to this version...  of course it took awhile to get used to P4 too.   Kinda wierd posting here again, has been a long time... will take a bit to look around and see all the new stuff.'

From what I understand P6 actually makes (and uses) them. Apparantly there's some kind of preference that you can set so that P6 compresses the files when not in use (to save hard drive space).

Hi, I have a mac. (and a pc but I don't use the PC much). There's a few things you need to know. when you put a folder into a folder on a PC, if the subfolders contain similar names the content will be merged, and any files with same name replaced but not the folders. whereas on mac the folders will replace (not merge) the similarly named folders. therefore you could easilly delete your whole runtime for poser which would be really sad if it wasn't backed up. It will take a bit of getting used to. there's a merging utility by kaveman (who is a member here) and that is really good for installing poser content. It's called ditto. You don't need anything from the softrabit website despite what it says on the readmes of all the products made for poser which you buy here. that was an old thing which applied to poser 4 and OS 9 only. poser 6 stuff normally needs no conversion to work on macs or PCs, with the exception that if PNGs aren't included you need kaveman's utility called Xshruggy to make them or you won't see thumbnails. You should be able to copy your runtime from your PC to your mac and just use it, apart from the poser software which you don't copy as you need the mac version of poser to use poser on a mac. If I understand correctly P6 allows multiple runtimes. I'd imagine darhorn could copy their existing runtime to the Mac but place it somewhere other than the P6 runtime folder and just link to it right? or... If darhorn's PC Runtime is set for P6 couldn't he/she completely replace the one that Mac P6 installs with the one from his/her PC? They would contain all the same original P6 items right?

yes he could but the very next time he buys a new poser thing from here and drops the runtime into his poser 6 folder he will lose his whole big runtime unless he knows what i just explained above. love esther

thanks everyone!  i did run into the folder replacement issue... and i think i was able to selectively add things in... think it all is working now :)

I have way too much stuff!  i know i have plenty of unreferenced obj files laying around...

can you get it to compress all the poser files in the background?  or do i need to open a figure and then resave it to get it to compress

this is much different than on my pc, but I am loving my mac :)

i meant if i could get it  just automatically compress all the files... someone pointed me to the python files, which worked great... saved a little over 5 GB

and poser files also take up lots of space. I have a lacie biggest, but I think my dad has a better thing. He got it from granitedigital.com - you buy enclosures with slide out trays and then you can back up your stuff easilly as well as having more space. Love esther

Yep, it is one of the new ones.. 2.16 Ghz cpu and 2 GB of RAM...  It runs Poser pretty well, but it is really hard to compare as the other computer is a PC with P4 600 Mhz with 700 MB of ram..

I have noticed a huge speed increase, but am sure it would be better if it didnt have to use Rosetta.

i do like P6 a lot better, especially with the expanded library.

estherau ( ) posted Thu, 08 June 2006 at 9:04 PM

well I have poser 6 on PC and mac, and they run around the same speed, so if the speed increase is huge then maybe, although you need at least 1gig or ram to run poser, so if you only had 700mb that would make it slow. Love esther

the older video card and the slower cpu i aqm sure makes a big difference...  one thing i noticed is poser takes full advantage of the cpu :)  usually have 96% free until i render.. :)

estherau ( ) posted Thu, 08 June 2006 at 9:11 PM

I'll get an intel mac one day. Anyway, have one with it, and happy rendering. Love esther
