Make sure you insert a Sun object into your scene (in the Assembly Room) after telling Carrara's Sky editor the position of it. Use that as your Distant light if you want.

It goes with the sky presets. The actual sun(ball) in the render is a seperate thing than sunlight(AFAIK). Should be able to use the ball w/ the highlight on it to reposition or the sun calculation option. Unless you turned the sun option off. It is a bit confusing.

Inserting that Sun Light object allows Carrara to display your Sun's position in your renders (if your have sky as your visual background. Adjusting the brightness of the Sun Light in its properties is seperate from the skylight brightness property in your render settings. The Skylight takes into account the entire sky for lighting your scene.
