Expanding a collapsed group in the instance list is not just a viewing feature of the GUI for that window. It actually makes grouped objects behave differently in your scene. One of the gotcha's you have to have your CTRL+Z fingers ready for.

Actually, it isn't a bug. Once you get used to it, you will probably find out that this gives you a bit more flexability in manipulating objects within/without groups -- drag-n-drop. It does take a bit of getting used to, and sometimes I still make too quick a move and...well you know what that can do. ;-)
I still think it is not intuitive. When the group is open, I have access to the contained objects, OK, but when I select the parent node I select the group, so I wish to manipulate the group in all the windows of the application (moving in 3D or copy&pasting or drag&dropping ...) Anyway ... I hope a few newbies like me saw the thread and stopped having headaches :)
I agree with you, Gwynhale, about how it should work. Maybe they should put an icon in front of the parent name that shows if the objects in the group are being treated as a group or as individuals.

I'm fairly new to Carrara myself and figured that one out while still playing with the demo. It's different, but I do like it... now that I'm getting use to it. It's no diffrent than having to select body out of the list in poser when trying to move the entire body and not just the body part. Or that's how my brain processes it. -- then again... I'm strange.

I always had problems with moving groups. When I select individual objects I can move them around normally (even those inside the group), but when I select the group, the cursor just does not transform to crosshair when it's above the translate arrows (or BTW the rotate circles or scale cubes). The worst thing is that sometimes it works, but I can't identify why ... It must be something really stupid, but I'm completely green in Carrara :) I use C 5.0.2. Any ideas? Thanks.
