Subject: Shader Domains

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Sat, 03 December 2005 at 5:10 PM · edited Sun, 12 July 2026 at 12:45 PM

I put shader domains on my Hexagon model and imported into Carrara as OBJ. Carrara choose the Hexagon material names to use as the shader domains instead of the names I entered in Hexagon. So I renamed them in Carrara. Maybe importing in CAR format would have worked better.

Anyway, is this all I need to start assigning Carrara shaders to my object's domains? Or do I need to setup a Layers List with Parametric Mapping, etc for my object?

I thought I would try using Shader Domains instead of busting my objects into pieces in Hexagon and working on them as seperate objects in Carrara instead of as domains. So far, it doesn't make a difference in my renders if the objects are kept seperate for divided into domains.

I used this window to assign shaders to my model. I guess that's all I have to do.

Hi, Shonner. Shader domains is the best way to handle shaders now. Layer list is just more of problem to manage in the texture editor. I think the layer list was left so it would be backwards compatible with older carrara files etc. Ringo

Ok. Because I noticed imported LWO files using Layer List shaders for their objects when viewed in Carrara. I'm used to grouping objects together. This domain stuff will take me getting some used to.
