Subject: C2.1 less stable in Win XP Home

ok....i just made my new computer and tested out Poser and Carrara 2.1....Poser 5 flies like you wouldnt imagine!! Carrara is another thing.... i tested C2.1 by exporting V3 with textures and character full body morphs.....then i import into C2.1 without running the export file in Grouper.....the problem is when i click on the figure and switch to the texture room, C2.1 freezes as soon as the texture room shows up.. i kinda solved this problem by running the OBJ file into Grouper....the texture room no longer freezed up right away....it still freezes up but just once in a while....and at least now its workable.....im still trying to figure out what triggers the occasional freezing in the texture room. has anyone experienced this? can anyone give me advice on how to prevent crashes like this? my specs: Intel P4 2.8E Gz 800Mz with 1MB 512 PC-3200 Win XP home 64MB video 40 gig drive Carrara 2.1 thanks very much for any advice! =)

I experience occasional freezing in the texture room (also in my bedroom, but that was due to bad isolation...) and that was when I got my new G4 dual processor Apple Macintosh. So, I think it has to do with new processors. Upgrading to C3 solved that problem...

whoa....that response was quick! thanks hoofedcommisar. i just checked in to post a follow up.... btw i never had this problem in Win98SE 1 gig Celeron.....things were slow but NO CRASHES in P5 or C2.1...unbelievable...

I was working on an image (for the contest) and because of the freezing the dog house never made it in the final picture, because I could not put the handpainted textures on them. I thought it could be the dual processor that C 2.1 could not handle, once the texturing had to be dealt with... Good luck dealing with it (you can call me Hoof, everybody does, I took it as my nickname everywhere else since)

I use EOVIA Software Renderer rather than openGL Renderer. No more crashes no matter what video card I have.

I ran 2.1 on XP Home and had no problems but I too used the software renderer. I don't think its an XP or cpu problem. Check the task manager and make sure it's really frozen and not just real busy. (Who makes your video card?) Ed

Smoothing? Wasn't that Bryce? C2.1 does not have a smoothing function if I remember correctly (maybe you meant 'subdivide'?) But in my case it was specific texture room freezing. Rendering and previewing were not a problem at all, and those processes use the videocard as well. I thought, last night, that it just happened when I wanted to work on a texture that contained bitmap information, does that ring a bell with anyone?

I use Carrara 2.1 in Win XP Home. It works pretty well, but I do run into some wierd issues, I blame it on XP Home. Overall i feel that Win XP Home blows chunks..XP Pro is the way to go, I'll be upgrading next month. XP Home seems to have wierd problems with certain software, I don't think it was really meant to used that hard, XP Pro is much more stable and robust.

whats the main differences between Home and Pro besides the price?

Think of Home as an upgrade from WinMe, and Pro as an upgrade from Win2000.
