Season's Melodies

2025 Holiday Contest

Entry #73

Christmas Crystals

Deep underground on a mysterious world, Crystals vibrate and seem to sing in resonant harmonies. In this future place, two carolers, from two different worlds, find a song to sing together for the holiday. For the Human girl it is "Jingle Bells" to celebrate Christmas. The alien girl is celebrating a major holiday of her own people, The Emasculation Of VorKeK the Hated, which also happens to land on December 25th. The traditional song of the celebration sounds very, very similar to "Jingle Bells" by an incredible coincidence. So they sing together in the happy Fungi-light! Their song resonates with the Tourmaline Crystals in the darkness, attracting the only-slightly-radioactive Sulfur Frogs to the colorful display. And soon a Higgs-Boson Quantum Butterfly manifests atop the crystal (or maybe not, as things are confusing with Quantum Butterflies)! Merry Christmas and a happy VorKeK Dies Painfully Day to everyone! This was a render done in Daz Studio 4.whatever, and Gimp used afterward to bring out the colors. The composition was pretty simple, big green crystals from the Crystal Cave product made by Daz and FToRi, glowing fungi (the blue ones from the same product, and the red.... I forget where I got those), and two ladies singing. I went for anime styling on my singers, as I hoped the wide eyes and generally friendly look would help here. And I wanted the darkness of the cave and glowing motes of hopefully-just-dust to mimic stars in the night sky. Light drove me insane, however. Well, more insane. Moving the mushrooms so their respective lights would not wash each other out took a lot of trial and error. At one point, a red fungi reflected through the crystals and looked remarkably like a screaming demon baby. After some thought, I removed that, thinking it was not very Christmas-like (though it works fine for VorKeK Dies Painfully Day). I also wanted Spiders for my glowing "ornaments", but was shocked to find I did not have such a digital product! So, welcome the Amazonian Tree Frog that I picked up a while ago for some unknown reason. I was denied the chance to use a giant glowing spider atop my crystal Christmas tree, but settled on a Butterfly instead. I wanted my Carolers to be mostly in darkness, and I think I succeeded too much. I poped this into GIMP to brighten the colors, and here we are. I still have the pre-brightened render if you need it. And I hereby request to be savagely beaten if I ever decide to do another render of dimly lit things in caves. Ugh....
