Renderosity Free Stuff Artist - Stonemason

Apr 16, 2006 at 12:00 am by nickcharles

Each month we showcase a Renderosity Free Stuff Artist, in appreciation for their thoughtfulness, and countless hours spent creating free items for the Renderosity community. This month we are proud to showcase the works of Stefan Morrell, better known to his Renderosity fellow artists as Stonemason.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I'm living in New Zealand, currently self employed making 3D content.

Did you begin with modeling, or did you begin with Poser? I guess I started with everything at once: Bryce, Poser, Max, Maya, and even Photoshop, all at about the same time. I wanted to see what everything had to offer. 3DSMax and Zbrush are now my weapons of choice.

What version of Poser do you use, and why do you like it best? Professionally, I use PP, P4, P5, and P6 (for testing and product creation). My preference for Poser is version 6. The new lighting and material options are making it a very powerful program and I'm eagerly waiting for the next version. D|S is also looking good.

The architecture in your models is magnificent. Where do you get your ideas from? Blame it on the coffee ;) Movies, books...the real world? Anything can inspire. I have a background in construction and design which helps in the environment models.

Is there a specific type of structure you like to model more so than others (i.e. sci-fi, historical, etc.)? Why? Sci-Fi has always been a favourite. I find it easy to model, as there are no specific rules to live by in modeling sci-fi, and I like all the fiddly detailing. Urban environments are also great fun.

What was the first model you ever made? Did it come out the way you planned? It was probably a sci-fi model of somekind. I doubt it came out as expected. Most of my early 3D endeavours are best left alone :)

When things just aren't going the way you planned, what keeps you going? Coffee!

Of all the models you've made, what's your favourite? Why? Urban Sprawl, probably not the most detailed model, but it has been very well received by the community. Urban Future is another of my favourites. It's like asking who your favourite child is. I like making the Hellcolumns too. These are a set of freebies made in Zbrush. Expect more of these in the future.

Do you have a favourite free stuff provider? Who is it and why? Not so much freebie providers, but I'm very thankful for all the people who provide insight into how the program works, and are always around to answer the difficult questions. Little dragon, Stewer, etc. The list is very long, but a big thanks to all those walking encyclopedias on how Poser works.

What is your favorite image created with your free stuff? I honestly couldn't pick any single image as my favourite. I'm happy seeing my models being used creatively.

How long have you been a member of the Poser Community? What do you like best about it? My introduction to Poser, and 3D in general, was through Renderosity in late 2002. I've found it to be a great place for learning about the various programs we use.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out modeling and sharing their free stuff items? Be original, and have fun! Oh, and don't use "!" in your folders ;) A sincere thanks for all the support I've received through this site.

Cheers!

Stefan
