Description

Given it's proximity to Birkenhead Docks, Liverpool and the River Mersey it's no surprise Wallasey took a pounding during the war. I could fill pages with pictures of bomb damage, there will be a few here and there but I'll start with a landmark I've already introduced you to. The top image is The Brighton Hotel, it faces the Town Hall ( middle image) on Brighton Street. These pictures were taken at the same time, the result of one raid. The Brighton Hotel and adjacent buildings were damaged by a bomb landing in the middle of Brighton Street. The Town Hall took a direct hit from an aerial mine, which detonated in the Council Chamber, the right hand half of the building, as you look at the picture, did not have an internal wall or floor left standing. Testament to the buildings strength, three of the support walls holding up the tower were 'badly' damaged....but it stayed up and it's still up. The lower image is more up to date, Beaufort Terrace was pulled down in the mid sixties to make way for the very stylish Council Admin block with another further up, the other side of the Town Hall. There will be quite a lot of trams and buses in these images...it seems there have always been 'trainspotters', there are also quite a few cars and vans, which will allow a few games of 'name that vehicle'....I'm sure Mike (Maxidyne) and Rob will enjoy that :-)

Hmmm... I think the folks in the US would call that urban renewal. Except that in Europe, we renew by rebuilding instead of completing the tear down and putting something new and ugly in its place. What I wonder is, how did they reconstruct the inside of the town hall without things falling in? And who sat with the glue bottle to put all the pieces together again? :)

Well, sadly, first thing I notice is how anything on a wheel is British and in the modern shots it ISN'T! This is coz we don't own or build nothing here anymore. I was going to go into a rant (as I've been reading a very VERY revealing book of late) but not on your post mate.. The news of late hasn't helped.. These are great Neil, I like.. Top right : thee is a Peugeot and Vauxhaul LOL (JOKE!) Rob
