Description

Spirit Knife I did this one yesterday. I’m writing several novels, and one called “Darla, Lost Caverns.” Darla is a Paranormal Investigator, who generally gets herself in trouble. The professor of the local University comes to see her, because strange things seem to have started happing when he was sent a fourteenth century knife. The knife seems to have a spirit bound to it. Since the knife is a central part of the story, I wanted to create an image of the knife to put in the book. As many of you know, I’m new to Blender, so you may have a good laugh at how I created the knife. I found a couple of images of a fourteenth century knife on the Net. I placed it in Blender as the background image, then created a plane. In Edit mode, I deleted all verts but one. I moved that single dot to the tip of the image, then used Ctrl->Left mouse click to trace only the larger portion of the blade, creating more verts and edges. I then press “F” to create a solid mesh.. I jumped into Object mode and created another plane, went back into Edit mode, deleted all but one vert, and, yes, traced the lower sharper portion creating more verts and edges. I then press “F” to create a solid mesh. I did the same thing with the ornamental part. It too is separate piece. To make the handle, I used several torus laid against one another. The tail of the knife is also a separate piece. I then extruded each piece to get the thickness I wanted, and slid the lower, sharper portion of the blade, up into the larger portion. I textured each of the five sections separately. I textured BOTH the lower and upper portion of the blade with the same texture. Of course, the rendered image showed all the textures as being very flat looking, with no depth or life to it. I left the lower, sharper portion of the blade alone, which still looks flat, but is how I wanted it to look, but used the Node Editor and three separate textures to create the nice corroded textures on the large portion of the blade, the ornamental portion, and the tail of the knife. What a difference this technique makes! The design at the back of the large blade was done separately, using the same technique as the knife. One vert at a time. I then extruded it to make it thicker, and sunk it into the blade, then added the texture. The table was made using a simple plane, which I put the image of a slate tile on. The background I made rather dark to focus more on the knife. The background image is a Flame fractal, which I had dropped into Photoshop ages ago, and added some stars and the bat. The image took just over an hour to render. I dropped it into Photoshop and added the rays from the moon, and was done. Yes, I know. Not the best job, but for my first attempt at modeling something from a single vert (dot), I have to smile :) Hope you enjoy the image.

Very nice overall design and exectution. You should really think about changing the color of the table. The beautiful lines of the knife get lost because of the similar color pallet. Maybe towards the cool greys and a little less busy. Nice job though.
