Description

I was in Amsterdam at April 3. to 6. and there I bought in a shop a bulb (yes just one) looking strange to me and its a kind of amaryllis, so I put it in pot and waited - and after long time some thing beautiful was growing! I am so very glad about and I hope I can do two of them for last year, who knows... So they call it blood flower - looks almost like a Alium but it is not - its wonderful red and orange and with incredible much of blossom stamps... have a look! what not easy to take a good picture wit the DOF...

It is indeed a Blood lily, [Scadoxus multiflorus] Priska ... I have 2 of them growing on my large property, in the rainforest section. (BTW - I do live in the sub tropics). I do like to call it my little Christmas tree wonder ;-)

Here is the info from my Botanica: These 9 species of bulbs from Africa and the Arabian Peninsula are closely related to the blood lilies [Haemanthus] and at one time were included in that genus. This Spring - to Summer flowering bulb, has lance-shaped, semi - erect leaves, forming a basal rosette and globular umbel with as many as 100 brilliant red starry flowers on an 18 inch [45cm] tall stem.

your background is like beautiful platinum or silver: It's blurred and shiny, and it makes a beautiful background for this bright red flower. The flower looks like botanical fireworks...it explodes and gets tangled with itself. I like that you present it to us so sparsely: Just the flower, and that silvery background. The photo "arrests" us immediately...a very bold capture.
