Description

I love the dramatic skies we get here in the Midwestern United States. In fact, the skies are frequently a lot more fascinating than the region. I guess there has to be some reward for enduring the monotonously flat drabness of the local topography. Living in Chicago, with all its tall buildings and various forms of architecture, can almost make you forget where you are. That is until you go to the top of one of the skyscrapers and look down, or drive beyond the city limits and remember that you're essentially living on top of a giant pool table that stretches for hundreds of miles in all directions. So, the mesmerizing skies act as a bit of a beguiling distraction to keep the locals from going bonkers. Well, to keep them from going completely bonkers. Photographed off my third floor patio/balcony in the Albany Park area of Chicago on July 27, 2011.

"We have just folded space from Ix." "Yes." "Many machines on Ix. New machines. Better than those on Richesse." "Yes...?" "You are transparent. I see many things. I see plans within plans. I see two great Houses: House Atreides, House Harkonnen...feuding...I see you behind it." "Yes." "You must share with us." That is the opening to the David Lynch version of Dune and it's the opening dialogue between a Guild Navigator and the Emperor. When I read your title to this piece, I thought of that dialogue. Funny how that works. Folded Sky...folded space...both are equally intriguing concepts. And as for this photo, it's quite amazing. Chicago skies are an aspect of atmospheric compensation. If it wasn't for the buildings here, someone could visit you on Sunday and then walk down a long, long, long road when they leave, and you'd still see them on Tuesday. THAT is how flat it is here. I think that has an effect on a lot of stuff, but we won't go into that here! What a cloud formation! Simply brilliant and it's set off wonderfully by the oh-so-casual city-street/apartment building environment below. I like this a lot.

Fascinating indeed. Too many hills and valleys where I live to allow such cloud formations. Thanks for posting this.

Did you know when you fly across the midwest there are often rows and rows of puffy clouds, all lined up as if someone has been plowing the sky? And Bill says the clouds here are amazing. It absolutely depends upon what you're used to! THIS sky, with those beautifully straight folds, is totally foreign to me. I've never seen anything like it. It's like the tide coming in, only upside down. Speaking of the tide ... my overwhelming experience of Illinois was that I was SO glad Lake Michigan isn't tidal! The whole damned state would flood twice a day! I grew to love the flatness, but still wouldn't want to live there. Fabulous sky, and an outstanding photograph.
