Description

Southern Alligator Lizard (center, camouflaged) with a couple White-lined Sphinx Moths and Salvia spathacea (Hummingbird Sage). I won't pretend posing this Alligator Lizard was easy around the Hummingbird Sage, avoiding stems and leaves... yes, Alligator lizards do wrap themselves in plants and wait for unsuspecting prey. It is native to the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from Baja California to the state of Washington. It is a large lizard, measuring up to 30 cm (12 inches) long. It lives in a variety of habitats including grasslands, chaparral, forests, and even urban areas. In dry climates, it is likely to be found in moist areas or near streams. These lizards eat small arthropods, slugs, lizards, small mammals and occasionally young birds (such as wrentits, bushtits, quail) and eggs. Rendered in Poser without post work. Models (all by me) include Southern Alligator Lizard (Lizards/Lizards of the World v2), White-lined Sphinx Moth (Nature's Wonders Giant Moths) and Salvia spathacea (Hummingbird Garden).

Love all these lizards! I live in Florida and see many different ones right here in my own yard, porch, gardens. At night we get the light colored or white and even see through geckos on our porch. They take care of our bugs.

What there really is such a thing as an alligator lizard? I seriously thought they only existed in "Ventura Highway" by America 😆
