Interview with Member of the Month - Darkrepast
Tell us how you came to get involved with Renderosity?
Darkrepast: How'd I get involved with Renderosity: I was looking for an asset that was not for sale on the Daz site and stumbled upon the site. I bought what I needed and continued to haunt the place, watching out for deals and such. In October, I saw the Halloween contest and decided to participate. That's when I started populating my gallery as well. The community is incredibly friendly and welcoming and so I found it easy to stick around and continue to share as well as offer some thoughts to other folks!
How has being a member of Renderosity affected you?
Darkrepast: First off, I've received some incredible and actionable feedback from other members. People are constructive and thoughtful with their replies and they genuinely want to help! Second, the contests have pushed me as an artist. Though I've only participated in two so far, I loved the concepts and they really gave me a lot to think about when I approached the pieces. Looking over other galleries and reading the comments people leave has taught me more than any of the courses I've taken. It's been a blessing for my advancement as an artist big time.

What forums do you participate in?
Darkrepast: Honestly, I haunt the forums more than participate but I frequently read the Daz Studio forum and the Photoshop forum. I am likely to offer some thoughts in these sections going forward, especially as I've started to feel more comfortable voicing my opinions and experiences. The forums have proven to be an invaluable place to get reviews and thoughts about assets, tools and how to use them. I probably wouldn't be capable of some of my photoshop techniques had I not visited the forums here and been inspired by people's thoughts, successes and challenges.

Your own work is often very character-oriented and dramatic: how do you go about creating your images?
Darkrepast: Often, my inspirations come from random moments of thought here and there. I'll see something mundane and want to turn it into a story. That's the biggest theme of my work is trying to implant a story in someone's mind. I want them to look at the people in the image and feel like they've caught them in the middle of something. When I go about picking my theme, I tend to do many renders, usually so that I can impact the background around the model and the objects. My Halloween contest entry, for example, involved rendering the two characters separately, rendering them with the floor, without it...the poor guy in the background...even the background got to be alone at one point.
Then I was able to layer it all together with the different Photoshop work. I don't want to go on too much about this, but that's the gist of how I craft my work and how it comes to fruition.
Do you have plans for future works?
Darkrepast: I work on several comics and I do book covers as well. I'm working on a piece that I'm hoping to share with Renderosity soon which came out of watching The House of Yes again recently. I recently took a course on how to do 'realistic' renders and have been playing a lot more with HDRI lighting and I feel it's improved my work dramatically. I'd expect to see more duos and trios in my work coming soon as that's what I've been practicing with the most.
