Description

I'm Not Suicidal J. M. Strother At 270 pounds I don't look very athletic, but I actually put in quite a bit of exercise every week. I recently bought a pedometer and have pretty faithfully been getting my 10,000 steps (roughly 5 miles) a day. Much of that is just normal walking at work, at the store, and about the house, but if it looks like I'm falling short then I do go out and take a walk around the neighborhood. But walking is not my preferred mode of exercise. I much prefer the bicycle. During the week I ride an exercise bike at the gym my workplace so thoughtfully provides. I do a minimum of 20 minutes a day on the bike and 20 on the rowing machine. I shoot for 30/20, but some days I just don't have it in me. Face it, the exercise bike is flat out boring, especially if you don't like the current station blaring from the gym's community radio (and I usually don't). Ah, but that all changes once I get outdoors on a real bike. Outside in the fresh air, with new scenery passing by every second, a self generated breeze on the face, I can ride for hours. About two hours, in fact; that's about my limit. I often hum a song while I'm riding my Schwinn 21 speed hybrid. 'What a Day For a Day Dream' by the Lovin' Spoonful and 'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong are two of my favorites since they so aptly fit my frame of mind when riding outdoors. Outside, I find bicycling very cathartic. I try to stick to trails for the most part, since in this town (St. Louis) riding on the street can be considered tantamount to being suicidal. The bike trail system in St. Louis is not the best, but it is rapidly improving. And there is the Katy Trail, possibly the best bike trail in the country at 225 miles long, just a 30 minute drive away. I recently decided to rejoin Weight Watchers (like I said, I'm at 270 pounds), and was pleased to find out that one of their sites was adjacent to Grant's Trail, or will be soon. It's actually adjacent to a planed extension of Grant's Trail

I was lucky to escape with just one small bruise. I guess I need to start acting my age. ;-)

LOL! I used to ride my Schwinn up and down curbs all the time. within a year the front wheel was severely bent & had to be replaced.
