Description

On 28th December last year I joined my fellow Endgame members in their small studio for a quite different session involving Dave Powell, a Brummy maths teacher by day but occasionally an avant-garde hurdy-gurdy player, putting his instrument through a guitar effects pedal! This fun side project is called Extremities - we'd had a few sessions with Dave a couple of years earlier which were released as a double-CD album, but this one was quite different again. A challenging listen, somewhat psychedelic and eccentric at times! Even on the day we fully intended to release the best material from the session, and I took my digicam along to capture some photos of us. I've been inspired in the past by David Hockney's panoramic photo-collages, and wanted to do something equally rough and patch-work like. So I took some shots of Alan and Steve from my sitting position, and Alan took some of Dave and I from his position. There's actually a door inbetween Steve and Dave, although it actually looks more like a small gap in the wall here. Naichan will remember this little room well, having been here with us himself four months earlier! This montage as you see it forms the centre spread of the CD's insert. Photos assembled and tinted in Photoshop, with text added in CorelDRAW. Fonts used were Orator and Porcelain. I'm listening to the album as I write this and it's by no means easy to describe... I guess there are some similarities to the legendary German outfit Faust, but that would be too simple a description. It does crunch quite fascinatingly *lol*... if anyone fancies hearing a bit, just let me know, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got no takers here ;-) Thanks as always for stopping by and for your feedback and critique. Thanks also for reading through my waffling here, it's not mandatory ;-)

Thanks Bernard, glad you're enjoying it... "Fragile" is the more accessible end of Endgame, whereas Extremities music is fuzzy and crunchy and quite crazy at times (although not without its subtleties) so I don't know how many would be interested ;-) Even so, I used some percussion rhythm tracks from some earlier pieces of mine, so you can even dance to it here and there!!

I'm probably the only other person here who has heard the FIRST Extremities CD L, so you can bet I can't wait to get my hands on this one. Your design here is another good reason for having it :-) Yes, this brings back memories, only I think that your cool tinting and collage work has flattered the studio somewhat! - no offence to the guys, but you know how wonderfully junk filled it is. It looks more spacious here. Love the clear caps font btw, and Dave's expression is priceless! Regards to all of you ;-)

I'm a big fan of Hockney myself. I've experimented along these same lines. The results are in my gallery. Great layout! I like the color and the way the text flows along the images. I'd love to hear the music!

Like life rising from the sea, music too rears its shining head from the complex masses. Here and there a wire nest, hues of matte plastic cages. Music is created, boiling up from the very chaos, a solitary angelic voice complimented by an industrial hum, the grinding of the not yet wrought, the music of tomorrow ; still on the boil. or for the more simple minded. I say! How one can create such impressive tunes in such a messy room, Ill never know. Me duck :)
