Description

In a fit of extreme maturity, I write: Rain, rain, gone away. Weese and camera, start to play. (Nyah! Nyah!) Got that off my chest... In an earlier posting, I mentioned Patunxent State Park being rather 'disjointed' in many different parcels. I think we stumbled upon a parcel being reclaimed from private ownership. Not far from Elicott City (once Elicott's Mills) of B & O fame, there is a small industrial park/community along the river. This is an out of the way place and fun to drive around. These images are from what seem to be remnants of an old Paper Mill (Bartgis Bros.) and probably surrounding mill houses for the workers. When we last drove through here, 8 years back, the mill was still doing something, and the houses were still lived in. Now the mill is still doing 'something,' but the houses are now abandoned, boarded up, and very sad. In some cases, toys are still where some children dropped them. Walking around the area, I spotted remnants of other buildings long gone whose existence I did not even guess at 8 years back. If the future is the 'Undiscovered Country,' let us take a look at existing forgotten country. BTW, I think this must be my favorite time to shoot pictures in the woods: trees are mostly bare, so things can be seen, but there is a hint of green and other colors to come. Besides, my garage is now dry (thanks to a pump system) and it is NOT raining! This first house is unusual: not stone! It is large. From what we can see, the second floor has one large room (maybe). The back is visible from another road, and it's fascinating. I must get there on a quiet day to shoot the back before this place is razed. Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

Dear TW, I agree thtat is is so sad to see places one cherished and filled with life, slowly disintegrating, holding on barely for the wrecking balls arrival. I had an uncle that lived in a "company town" that ran a sulphur mining operation in the middle of nowhere. The sulphut ran out, the company left, and one by one the houses disappeared. It's a strange place to drive throuhg now. A few houses are still there and in private ownership. You'll see one perfectly normal house on a perfectly normal block, except all the other houses on the block are totally erased! Very strage! Excellent work!! Love, Meredith

What state is this in? Its funny how houses seem to just lose their lives and will when the families move away. I live near the beach and every winter it looks like shanty town till the summer when all the people come back and the houses just seem to take on life again!! its amazing and you have made a perfect picture with this!!

Drove up this road the other day. Almost everything pictured in this section is flattened. Just chimneys remain.
