Long ago the Osage lived in the sky, they wanted to learn where they came from, so they went to the sun. "You are my children", he said,then they wandered farther until they came to the moon "I gave birth to you and the sun is your father", she told them. "You must leave the sky and live on the earth", and they obeyed. The earth was covered with water and they could not return home to the sky, so they called out, but no answer came. The animals were there with them, of these the Osage appealed to the elk for help, for the elk inspired confidence in all creatures. Brother elk dropped into the water and called to the winds. They came from the four corners and blew the waters into a mist, exposing only rocks at first. Finally the soft earth appeared and when it did the elk rolled all around in it from joy. The loose elk hairs stuck to the soil and began to grow, from these sprouted wild turnips, corn, grasses, potatoes and trees.
