Description

Main picture: Carved out of the mountain between 1274 and 1244 BC, the temple is dedicated to various Gods, but is dominated by the massive statues of Ramses II overlooking the lake Nasser. When the Aswan dam was built, the temple was moved to the present location. Over a period of three years UNESCO and the egyptian government assisted in dismantling the temple stone by stone and reassembling it to prevent it from being submerged. Each statue is 20m high. Left: Ramses II hunting and Rameses II conquering his enemies with a mace. Right: The smaller temple is dedicated to goddess Hathor and Ramses' favourite wife Nefratari.

fantastic image. i've been fascinated with these images for most of my life. When the aswan dam was built, they had to move some statues. the american engineer corp had to cut them in 3 piecs to move them. the neares rock formations where many miles away.

Incredible to see the size of this art-in-stone, dwarfing the people in front of it! Excellent collage!
