Description
The film of The Birds as made by Hitchcock was adapted from a short story by Daphne du Maurier, who, for the first time was showing herself to be an exponent of the sinister and macabre.
In Daphne's story, set in Cornwall, S.W.England the birds began attacking humans after a hostile winter with little food, first the seagulls, then birds of prey and finally even small birds, all turned against mankind.
The nightmarish idea appealed to Hitchcock who turned it into the celebrated film but Daphne disliked it's relocation to small-town America.
'The Birds and other Short Stories' by Daphne du Maurier was published by Penguin Books in 1963.
