Description
~Forbidden Planet~
This 1956 movie was the one that revolutionized science fiction movies as we know nowadays, and paved the way for the much later "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" franchises. It became famous for several reasons:
* The most expensive sci-fi movie of its period.
* Actress Anne Francis wore the shortest mini dresses ever seen on the silver screen, scandalizing the entire world.
* "Forbidden Planet" is widely recognized as the first film to reference Isaac Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" outside of his books and specifically in a science fiction context unrelated to his own works. This holds unique significance as the pioneering work that brought Asimov's concepts to the big screen in this manner.
* It used the largest and most expensive movie set ever built for a sci-fi movie until then. The immense, detailed scale of its sets and props created a tangible world that would not be seen again until George Lucas's Star Wars in 1977.
* It featured "Robbie the Robot", the most famous and expensive robot ever made for a sci-fi movie. It was so expensive that it was later reused in other movies like "The Invisible Boy" and TV shows like "Lost in Space".
* This was the world's first SERIOUS sci-fi film with a big-budget Shakespearean plot based on "The Tempest", casting the famous and expensive actor Walter Pidgeon to play the scientist. Pidgeon had a long and successful career at MGM, earning two Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in the 1940s. His casting in the leading role added significant prestige to the production, which was unusual for a science-fiction film at that time. Leslie Nielsen played the protagonist, which is interesting because he started his career playing action and drama roles, but later became famous for comedy.
* The special effects were hand drawn by Disney animator Joshua Meador. You can immediately recognize the Disney style when you see it.
* It was the first movie to feature its entire music score made with custom built electronic equipment. It wasn't allowed to call it "music", so they listed it as "electronic tonalities" in the credits. It has basically invented electronic music, where not a single musical instrument was used.
* It has introduced many elements that were later reused in Star Trek, like the phaser pistol, the "United Planets" organization (Star Fleet), the adventures of the "away team", the personal communicators, space exploration crews and a spaceship that was a character in the movie.
* The crew of the United Planets cruiser C-57D in "Forbidden Planet" is widely recognized as the first serious depiction of a professional, organized military space exploration team in science fiction cinema. This has directly paved the way for the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek and countless other successors. Note how the Star Trek starship NCC-1701D also ends with a "D", using a similar ship naming structure as in "Forbidden Planet", and even sharing the same disc-shaped signature design that was unique to "Forbidden Planet" as a human related ship.

That was absolutely my favorite classic SF movie.
Oh, and her short mini dress shocked and traumatized me so much that I died 7 times, and had to be reincarnated 7 times ;-)
It wasn't until I saw her running up the short stairs later in the movie that I suddenly realized how SHORT was dress was for the period. I think she wore 3 or 4 mini dresses in that movie, and she looked marvelous in all of them. The one in my image was one of them. ^____^
Anne Francis was one of THE most beautiful actresses of her day. And she did a TV series later.
She was definitely stunning in this movie, emphasized by the mini dresses specially designed to show her off in this movie. ๐
And if you get a chance..Get the Blu-Ray version of the movie. The detail is mind blowing..The 2001 A Space Odessey of its day.
My version is not Blu-Ray, but was computer-colorized, so I am happy enough it wasn't the original black & white. It was restored, remastered and colorized. ^___^
Forbidden Planet was absolute class. Great article, thanks.
Thank you! Being a lifetime fan of Star Trek, the moment I watched Forbidden Planet, I immediately recognized the exact same elements that made every episode of the TV series. They followed the same basic elements: the "federation of planets", the disc-shaped ship, the military structure, the communicators, the away teams, and even the womanizer captain. Forbidden Planet provided the blueprints for every episode of Star Trek's TOS and TNG, replacing Robbie with Spok and Data, respectively. And when it comes to the sheer scale of the sets, I could almost recognize Star Wars. This movie has left its fingerprint on everything that came later, and that's what makes it so special. ๐
Forbidden Planet is a color film.... What do you mean "original black and white"?
Sorry for the confusion - you are absolutely correct. Things can get confusing because many (most) of the production and publicity photos were released in B/W because it was easier and cheaper to print in the 1950s, since printing technology wasn't optimized for color just yet. Forbidden Planet was actually an exception to the rule, where MGM has filmed it in full color. Yet another staple of this film in the industry! ^____^
Great render for a great movie, and one of my all-time favorites
Thank you! The challenge here was replicating the exact dress she used in the movie. ^^
I really liked Forbidden Planet although I had already seen Star Trek and Star Wars before. You can say it has similar elements as later movies but it is still unique. And for the mini dress ... usually I'd say I wouldn't miss such details, but I guess I have to refresh my memories ...
Gorgeous movie poster. That's one to print out.
Thank you! I posted this in 4K, so it's large enough to print. ^___^
Excellent !
Thank you! ^____^/
Un film culte et un personnage fรฉminin sublime dans ses jupes si courtes !!
I have rewatched the movie many times and it never gets old. ^^
Indeed a classic with class! Anne Francis, Walter Pidgeon, fantastic sets, and a harbinger of what was to come. We actually have a U.S. Space Force now. It's a wing of the Air Force, but still...
Really excellent work on this salute to a classic!
Thank you! The Star Trek version of the personal communicators would later become the flip-phone, which would later be replaced by the smartphone. ^____^
Amazing render for the film, love all those facts you included about it.
Thank you! It was also one of the earliest sci-fi movies to be shot in color, while the advertisement was printed in black & white because the printing industry was not ready to color just yet. This creates confusion nowadays, because all the ads are in B&W when the movie itself was in full color. ๐
@Ken1171_Designs Wow, yeah I could see that creating some confusion for sure!
